Maybe Tobe Hooper's time under Spielberg's wing during Poltergeist are why Invaders from Mars and Lifeforce feel so...limp.

It was until Chainsaw 2 and Spontaneous Combustion where the real Tobe Hooper came back in full force.

Just showed this at my school tonight as part of a Halloween double feature for the students. We have a Blu-ray projector and a nice theatre with a decent sound system, so it was quite a treat. Many kids had not seen it before and were definitely screaming, especially at the clown scene. Some kids claimed they weren't scared, but I doubt it.

I also showed this to my teenage nephew for the first time recently, and the "clown" bit definitely got him good. He also really enjoyed how much it influenced the "Upside-Down" aspects of Stranger Things (we're both big fans of that show), and it blew his mind when I revealed that Craig T. Nelson was the voice of Mr. Incredible.

How old were they?

Poltergeist is one of my all time favorite horror films.

Cool. And it's great that they had a positive reaction to it, being teenagers and whatnot.

I haven't seen Invaders From Mars in eons, but Lifeforce certainly doesn't leave me limp. And it's a pretty exciting movie, too! So much crazy coolness, I love Lifeforce!

Just behind TCM and Eaten Alive as my favorite Hooper flicks. Need to check out TCM2 again some day, haven't seen that in ages either.

My parents picked this movie for my sister and I to watch on a Saturday night back in the 80s from a mom and pas video rental store. Needless to say it scared the shit out of us.

10 years after I asked them why they would rent such a movie for their 5 and 6 year old kids. They said "Hey, we thought it was kid appropriate. The VHS box said it was made by Steven Spielberg". Ha! I almost died of laughter! But I'm glad they did rent it for us. It started my long fascination with film. Horror film in particular.

Haha! Yeah that's a plus one on Lifeforce as well. That's my second favorite Hooper film after TCM. Wasn't a fan of Invaders from Mars though

I saw a 70mm print of LIFEFORCE a few years back at the AFI Silver and oh...my...god! the 6-track audio was insane - the balls to the walls ending and the grandiose music score was so intense it literally sounded like the top of the auditorium was going to crack open and the entire audience was going to be jettisoned into outer space ~ wow, just wow!!

Most of my students I talked to liked the movie, but some said they didn't find it scary. I just can't believe that.

I think the film does a great job of really establishing the family dynamic and letting us get invested in the characters all the while gradually ratcheting up the horror for maximum effect by the end.

Saw this theatrically a couple of times back in the summer of '82, can't believe that was 35 years ago. Still holds up nicely and although I lost or gave away a number of the original movie posters I collected at that time, I still have my B&W Poltergeist with the iconic image of Carol Anne in front of the TV along with that equally iconic tagline: "They're here!"

My gal had the same reaction and she was born in the 80s. Seems anything to her that's pre-Scream or so is old, boring, or cheesy, etc

Mine too. In fact, I believe this may have been the very first contemporary horror movie I watched as a kid in the early 1980s. I first saw it on TV, and back then, like in the movie, networks would not run 24 hrs but end at some point after which you would just get static "snow".

Well, when I watched this, from my bed, it was that evening's very last show. There was a very short 'CU tomorrow' from the announcer and then ... static. I had no remote for the TV in my room, and I freely admit it took way too long to work up the courage to leave the safe zone of my bed and cross the floor to switch off the TV set, while keeping my ears out for any voices from it.

Just rewatched this. Of all the scares. The sudden chair poltergeist on the table always freaks me out every single time.

Who wants Scream Factory to do a new CE blu-ray with 2K or 4K remastering and extras galore even a commentary from a Poltergeist fan/historian?
