Because it makes getting the disc out harder?
Because most people don't display their movies face forward on the shelf like in a store?
Because it doesn't protect the disc any better? Etc. etc.

They're usually a few dollars less expensive than elsewhere (in most cases), and they ship for free to the post office around the corner from my house. I generally get things either release day or the day following. Amazon seems to be pretty slow for a lot of titles.
They should have given you a $5 gift card, for the inconvenience.

You forgot, that it takes up more space on the shelve.

I don't collect slipcovers but if there are 2 copies one with and one without, I always pick the one that has it.

Went ahead and got this one since the slip will probably be out of circulation soon and I could never find one for the mastered in 4k disc. Normally not a huge slip guy but for certain lines like Disney, Scream, etc it's nice to have them to offset the typical prices on 'boutique' products outside my typical bargain range. Wouldn't surprise me at all if these Sony releases end up in the savestation before too long in the same way several of the Mi4k ones ended up at $5. Wish I had a 4k display to watch them on at the moment but will wait it out a bit and continue to cherry pick catalog favorites here and there.

I guess I must be one of the lucky ones because I have a slip on both my BD and UHD Dracula.

I consider myself lucky when I don't get them- less card stock to recycle.

It's too bad all the talk lately has been about the slipcover instead of the movie. I like a nice slipcover as much as the next guy, but when people start saying they won't buy the movie if it doesn't come with a slipcover, is a bit over the top in my opinion. It should be all about the movie, not the cardboard.

Worse than that is not buying because of the cover art in general, e.g. River Kwai. Yes, it looks like something a drunken orangutan cooked up but come on, it's an award-winning David Lean classic presented in a luvverly 4K restoration.

I agree, I would buy it regardless.

I agree as well, I don't understand that mentality, it's all about the content and only the content, I would never let ugly cover art dissuade me from buying a movie.

Note to self: pick up The Bridge on River Kwai

None of these directly pertain to my accusation that comparing BD and UHD slipcovers to refrigerator storage boxes is an incongruous comparison. Having said that, I'll bite...

Because 90% of them are just the cover in cardboard

Then why does the studio even bother with them? Again--it's to catch the consumer eye through a glossy coat, embossing, gilding, etc. Even if it's just the cover art repeated, it's usually "gussied up" to "pop" more attractively.

Because it makes getting the disc out harder?

That's too First World Problem for me to even dignify with a counterargument.

Because most people don't display their movies face forward on the shelf like in a store?

It still potentially offers a "wow!" moment for the viewer when pulled off the shelf. Heck, even the spine of a slipcover is typically more attractive than the regular plastic-coated case spine.

Because it doesn't protect the disc any better?

Never said anything about protective factors. I only made the case that slipcovers are specifically designed and used to draw the consumer's eye toward a specific title and away from all other buying options. Therefore, if they're meant to be attractive and "pop" on the store shelf, there's no logical reason to profess confusion about the buyer applying the same philosophy with their purchase at home. The comparison with a hardcover book's dust jacket was quite astute.

It's been out for 2 days. Do I need to see a million posts about it? No, but people are just now getting it in their possession and not everyone has watched their copy yet, and it's a quick judgment to make once it's in your hands. The movie talk will resume, but to be fair it's been talked about for years now anyway.

I'm glad people mentioned the relative scarcity of the slipcover, cause I went to Walmart to buy the movie, and I'm sure others are doing the same. That's only a good thing for physical media. Slipcovers do influence a LOT of purchases, the studios include them because many collectors will buy the movie sooner and at a higher price, which translates to greater success for the title on disc.

I'm excited to finally watch this movie as I've been meaning to for years, but the pretty slipcover is a nice bonus. Honestly how many people say they won't buy a movie if it doesn't have a slipcover? That's ridiculous, and I imagine pretty darn rare. I've seen maybe two posts like that ever on this site. Now, a lot of people will wait for a lower price if it doesn't have one, I don't see anything wrong with that.

Sure it does, protects the case as well. They're not industrial strength shields or anything but it's an extra layer of protection.

Yup. I'd buy this movie either way since it's a favorite going back to the Criterion LD release and it's a movie I'd pay a bit more to get a definitive version. The slip is a nice bonus for premium products like UHD and boutique label blu releases in the same way Japanese LD collectors value OBI strips as a more complete, unique product.

People get more excited by the slip cover than the 4K movie. That's crazy.

Why do Sony purposefully alter the 1080p disc art included in their 4K combos to bland city, when the same disc will have disc art in the 1080p Blu-ray set? It makes no sense!
