I know it's such a shame that you can actually see the ship now.

Do we know whether or not if the release in September will also include the original director's cut as an extra? Since it is Paramount it could be like what they did with different versions of The Godfather Part III.

I highly doubt it. It’s not like The Godfather Part III since this only exists in 2001 DVD quality and would at best be an upscale at best, and why bother?

Sounds like most of the complaints can be fixed by adjusting your TV's settings to your liking

I wasn't aware of this. There aren't digital tools or guides that keep things presented as intended? Do they literally "go by eye" with these scans? I would genuinely like to know more about how some presentations end up wrong, like Explorers or the original blu-ray of Event Horizon, and many others. Is it a mater of some studios doing a better job of noticing the geometry issues? How do they end up with scans with stretched objects, faces, etc.?

If, after a scan, they notice the geometry is off a bit, why can't they correct it as necessary by making slight adjustments to the aspect ratio to fix the geometry? Surely if I can look at a screenshot and see that heads are unnaturally stretched or squished, the experts at these studios should be able to see that, too.

It doesn't make sense to me that in 2022 with all the high-tech software and hardware and UHD releases there's so way to automatically ensure the correct geometry and aspect ratio is preserved without distortion.

Can't help it - we all have our own pet peeves and notice different things on these discs. Geometry is something I tend to be sensitive to and it bugs me.

But yeah, it can be a rabbit hole, wondering which is correct.

Seriously, for the first time we can actually see the shape of the ship. I never understood what the ship was supposed to look like.

It's the same team from the 2001 director's Edition. It's not a bunch of new guys trying to figure out how they can outdo the old guys and change things. These are the same guys simply trying to make it the way they wanted it then -- except now they had the time and the money and the tools to get it just right. And on top of that people are trying to compare the look of a very murky dirty scratched transfer in standard definition to one that has been completed in 4k. They're trying to reproduce the cut of the movie from 2001 not the look -- because by all reasonable criteria the 2001 DVD looks like absolute crap. And as soon as the announcement was made my DVD of the director's cut when in the garbage can. Sure hope they don't cancel the 4K version. LOL

…oh wait those are from the theatrical version.
That's one of my favorite additions. Seeing it fade out on the view screen is just lazy where seeing the blink out on the exterior of the Enterprise is just an "oh shit" moment.

I used to watch the original theatrical cut of TMP religiously as a kid and I still had no idea where things were in relationship to each other. The moment Kirk gives the order to "Hold relative position here", I didn't know that the Enterprise was now in front of the V'Ger vessel and had turned 180º to face it! I thought it was still moving in the same direction even when it entered the interior. Once I saw vessel fully revealed in the Director's Edition, BAM! Everything suddenly clicked.

The only real flaw that's still present in the Director's Edition is that one shot of the tiny Enterprise flying in front of the V'Ger vessel. It'd be nice if they took that shot and replaced it with something that showed a better view of the front of the V'Ger vessel and have the Enterprise turn around to face it. There's certainly enough time spent on that shot to pull something like that off.

And in regards to the 'reveal' ruining the mystery of the V'Ger vessel? Well, keeping things a mystery isn't really the point in TMP. From the very beginning towards the very end, things are gradually revealed to us. The scope of the cloud, the build up to the reveal of the Enterprise, the jouney through the cloud, the origins of V'Ger and V'Ger itself. Revealing the V'Ger vessel compliments the film because like everything else, it's overall reveal comes slowly and gradually. And seeing this very alien looking vessel in it's entirety also helps set-up the V'Ger reveal sinec it turns out to not be alien at all.

April-June is going to be huge for genre fans on streaming services...ST:TMP 4K, The Batman, Moon Knight, The Orville Season 3, Stranger Things Season 4, Obi-Wan Kenobi...it's gonna be like the college football playoffs for fantasy fans. Is this going to be 100-GB disc?
And is Star Trek II getting the same treatment?

brings to mind a Screening I went to of The Menagerie Remastered, in late 2007, like a week or less before the DVD/HD-DVD Combo(died quick) was released for the first season of TOS remastered.

when waiting for something to show up on screen, the lights briefly started to dim, as the screen started to glow, there was a sigh of relief in the Audience, that sigh was quickly replaced with a burst of laughter, at the sight of a "Windows Startup screen" for about 4 seconds, before it shut off, and the lights were raised again. People were just loosing it, Laughing and booing, I do recall someone shouting "Cheap F**ks"

I'll never forget it. the rest of the screening was fine, and The Menagerie was just Gorgeous. but there for a few moments, damn.

You really don't know the movie well AT ALL if you think the theatrical version doesn't have lens flare. Come on....

100GB disc? Probably. The movie is 136 minutes and Paramount uses 100 GB for longer movies.
They've been a little bit stingy with UHD100s lately though, with the four Treks as prime examples. Not that everything needs one, and those movies are on or about two hours each (though TMP theatrical is still 132 minutes), but with all that tasty grain and a few foreign dubs getting a piece of the action it means that they're not all the way there in terms of compression. Not terrible, no no no, but an extra bit of breathing room would've been welcome.

Hopefully they'll give TMP DE the proper treatment seeing as it's such a prestige project for them.

It might even be a bit longer than the 136 if this is correct:

For fans of the film, Fein also has another big surprise he revealed during the interview. “There's a deleted scene that we wanted to have back 20 years ago,” he said. “This was Ilia and Scotty and Decker in engineering. We found some of the footage 20 years ago, but there was no audio, so there was really no point in showing the scene. But it's three or four scenes that people have wanted to see forever. So we re-transferred that footage… and we found out that Bob looped the dialogue for the scene. Now that scene's going to be included in the physical media release and others, because he looped a few. And we found other key scenes that are just fantastic.”
Which would make a 100 slightly more likely depending on the length of the new scenes.

I've only seen two Fathom Event screenings...Fantasia 75th anniversary and Lawrence of Arabia. Both looked fine. Maybe just lucked out?

Before Alien Covenant was released there was a special fathom showing of Alien but it looked rather dodgy and it was fairly distracting. Now I am fairly certain that showing was 1080i, hell it might have even been the old D-VHS transfer.

Hopefully the STTMPTDE showing is a proper DCP or I will be most perturbed.
