I'll say these movies are hilarious (with Nielsen so far) but not something to take a family to go see in most cases in theaters with the humor. Even though it's PG13.

This opens Friday. The story will be good I hope, but the gags and humor hopefully work 7 out of 10 gags to be funny. I don't expect to be laughing the whole time, but that would be nice.

How often should there be a joke? I think there's a balance, where you can't bombard the audience, and have to pace the jokes. Some you can stack on top of the other to build more laughs, while others need to be kept separate. So it can't be wall to wall with jokes, slapstick or gags.

If true, that's kind of funny, but a potentially good match found onsreen between Liam and Pamela.

Saw it at a sneak last night and it's exacltly what a "Naked Gun" legacy sequel should be. There are some insane bangers for jokes that left my audience unable to hear a lot of the dialogue due to the nonstop laughter.

I am seeing some early reactions and am genuinely surprised by how positive some of them are.

Don't get me wrong. I did not think this looked bad or anything, but I was kind of on the fence from the trailers if I am being honest. I felt like this could go either way.

But I would certainly be happy if this actually turns out good. Fingers crossed!

What I love about the older flicks, and that includes Airplane, is how some of the jokes aren't even given a second thought by the characters in whatever scene is playing out. The heavily armed goons walking through the metal detector checkpoint in airplane, or Drebin just casually walking through a fully functioning door even though it's just a wall in naked gun, no one reacts, it just happens. These gags would fail if someone were to react to them. And those movies have plenty of such throwaway, albeit utterly hilarious visual gags that don't necessarily disrupt the movie's pace or balance. Though I guess also there, less is more. So I hear ya.

Really hoping the movie is better than the trailer makes it out to be, because I saw that trailer twice in the past month in a packed cinema (before JP: Rebirth and Superman) and both times it was accompanied by deathly silence... eliciting not so much as a light chuckle from anyone in the entire audience.

Yup, I found some of the jokes they decided to use in the trailer of the "could've been left on the cutting room floor" variety.
Will still see it and reward it financially because theatrical comedies are on life support currently, and it's a damn shame.

As for the PG-13 rating, it's in line with the previous movies. Sure, you can argue that PG-13 back then was a bit edgier compared to now, but these movies have never been too explicit or vulgar, so it would feel weird having Drebin swear.
That's completely fair. I didn't look too hard at the credits, though I assume MacFarlane was involved creatively in some capacity and most of his recent material has gone beyond PG-13, so I thought his involvement would signal an R rating. I've also always found it odd that studios seem to chase PG-13 ratings for legacy sequels where the audience that saw the previous film is well over 18 and I often wonder how the films could be compromised to ensure the rating. But, as you say, this is a PG-13 series, so maybe everyone knew that going in and made the movie accordingly.

Anyway, in spite of the "family-friendly" rating, it looks like this won't get a Dolby Cinema release where I live, so I'll probably just get the 4K UHD release.

‘The Naked Gun’ Review: Liam Neeson Nails the Deadpan Goofiness, but Pamela Anderson Is the Scene-Stealer in Uneven Legacy Sequel
Paul Walter Hauser and Danny Huston also appear in director Akiva Schaffer’s police procedural spoof built around the son of Leslie Nielsen’s Frank Drebin.

Well, well, that looks like it's gonna prove me wrong at least a bit, and maybe a lot. Got no problem to admit that.

"Since when do cops have to follow the law?"

I keep thinking about this line every day. It's to damn stupid, simple, but unbelievably funny.
