The Nolan movies could sure potentially look a lot better on 4K if different methods were used. I’d say only really Tenet and Dunkirk look “stellar” as they are.

And Oppenheimer. The 4Ks come from interpositives and the newer movies look "stellar" because most of the footage is IMAX and 65mm. When the resolution of the source is so big even an interpositive scan still yields optimal results, but when it's 35mm (which is how most of his pre-Dunkirk movies are), it tends to look softer.

I do still think that the 35mm IP thing doesn't help, but more and more UHDs are being sourced from such elements and look great, so it's more that he twatted them with varying amounts of DNR (as we've been saying from the start) which is why they look so soft. BUT I'd still take that look vs the tragically oversharpened appearance of the TDK Blu which remains one of the most bizarre transfers I've ever seen for a then-new movie. Begins I'll always be on the fence about as I'm one of the few who didn't hate the old transfer and the DNR is easily at its most ruinous on the UHD of that one out of all the Nolans.

Plus the fact that the orange skin tones go nuclear in some scenes in Begins.

It's only an eyesore on that one shot of Michael Caine in the doorway, for me.

I was gonna make the qualifier that it's NOT just about the Melting Butler, in case someone went straight to that, but didn't bovver. Heh. Yeah, it's not just about that, there are several other spots throughout that are badly smoothed over, juxtaposed with nicely grainy shots from one scene to the next and it's so uneven it's far more distracting to me than the general level of filtering seen on the other UHDs of his. Some weird aliasing at times too. Begins is still one of the biggest disappointments I've had on UHD.

Maybe, haven't re-watched it since it came out, but the BD is just too lifeless to go back to.

True but the BD is consistent. I can deal with the UHD look of BEGINS, especially in Dolby Vision on PVOD, but of all of Nolan’s UHD’s, that’s the one that hurts the most because you can see how good it could’ve looked. Geoff’s not wrong.

Just finished 12 and thank heavens they did a new scan. The old BD looked dry and muffled to me color wise and it’s always been my biggest complaint. HDR breathes extra life into the gorgeous Italian color palette’s.

This film always gets so much unnecessary hate; they tried a different swing at the heist film and I think it’s a fantastic follow-up. Obviously it doesn’t reach the sheer perfection that is 11 but it swings for fences and for all intents and purposes, is a good sequel. Love seeing Julia get a bigger role and her section is always hilarious to me.

Now onto 13!

The movie plays much better when you realize there's a thematic link between Ocean and his crew trying to one-up their last heist and Soderbergh and his crew trying to one-up their last movie. The perils of the sequel essentially. I, too, think it gets too much hate. It has so much style to boot, just fast and free and playful.

12's plot isn't great on the surface but it's still got the same style, charisma, music and dialog that makes the other two so good. These movies excel on vibe over anything else and they've all got that vibe. I know some seem to dislike the sequels and that's fine, but I'd guess they're into the first one for less reasons than I'm into it for.

Ocean's 12 had a 4K DI back in the day, but I suspected a cut 35mm negative would have been done in 2004...

I suppose Ocean's 13 comes from the original 4K DI from 2007

I’m 100% with you here. These three movies are more about “the experience” and all three of them deliver on it. The cast’s chemistry is just off the charts.

12 is my favorite of the trilogy by a wide margin specifically because of what you stated.

Plus, the Tess/Julia Roberts bit is still glorious.

How mad is it to shoot stuff in IMAX for exceptional clarity and detail and then DNR the 35mm elements? Nolan be crazy.

RE: the Ocean's steel, stacked discs are a bit of a pain but mainly because I feel like I'm going to snap either the discs or the case when trying to get the discs out.

Yep. It's a crap shoot as to what hubs you get with steels, even single-disc hubs can be ruinously tight while others only need a feather touch to get the disc out.

Hits the nail on the head for me, and also the reason I love Out of Sight. Plot schmot, some films just bleed 'cool' and although I've never been a big fan of '12', I wasn't going to grab 11 and 12 in steelbooks and not have 12 to go with them.

Has anybody gotten shipping notifications for these from Amazon? My spidey sense tells me I won't be getting these anytime soon...
