You should tell your wife that people are still buying DVD and Blu-ray on a regular basis, “so stop drinking the kool aid or I will divorce you”. She sounds like a wrong un.

No, but seriously, that’s pretty lame.

Disc collectors here have explained numerous times the reasons they buy disc, why do you keep asking for repeat answers? I don't remember a single post where “I collect disc because they are cheap”.
Spot on. It’s about the life long love of films and their preservation. For many of us, that means buying what we can in the best format possible, the whole point of true HT to me.

That does sound like an embarrassing collection. You know 4K streaming may not sound as good as the upconverted DVDs but most of the time it should look as good or better.

My local thrift shops accept movie donations. There's some organized programs too like discs for deployed military but they have rules like "nothing scary" which leads me to wonder what would qualify.

If you don't have a player hooked up then by all means put those movies in a bin and either give them to someone who may use them or put them into storage.

If I were you, I don't think I would have a player or discs. I wanted to "go digital" at some point and was hoping for a simpler less cluttered life but the quality and reliability soon made me realize it was a terrible idea. If you can live with the fantastic quality and reliability of streaming then why keep discs at all ?

What kind of cinephile serious about watching ripped movies would limit their self to one hard drive anyway?
HDFury makes some devices that may work as a HDMI spliter. I have the Integral 2 and tried it for that purpose but that arrangement did not work well for me.

Boxes with separate HDMI out for audio does seem confined to the upper tier. My two Sony UHD BD players, Oppo UHD BD player and Zappiti Neo all have HDMI out for audio and they are used.

The Zappiti Neo has a slot for a disk drive and I have a TB SSD installed on mine. I have all my DVD and BD concerts ripped to it. Can watch without turning on the Zappiti NAS.

HDFury will do what you need them to but not needing them I think is even better. I was happy to have them when I needed them but that was many years ago.

The concert videos without turning on the NAS sounds like a great idea. My Z9X is actually in a time out because the Blu Ray Audio from Dark Side of the Moon is incorrectly played back but they have new FW that I haven't tried.

Would I be correct to assume your wife or you have never visited a store like this (the home page is a slide show)? If you were to ask for a demo using streaming they would start which should be embarrassing to both of you.

You really need to get out more and see what others do in terms of home theater.

I intend to try the Z9X as a music player at some point. Will copy all my FLAC and MP3 files to a 64GB flash drive and see how it works out.

Netflix ad supported tier will be $6.99 (£4.99 for U.K.)

Around 4-6 minutes of ads per hour including pre rolls.

Resolution maxes out at 720p

It will be known as basic with ads.

Those on the current 1 screen plan (basic) will be upgraded to a max of 720p regardless of whether they switch to the ad free option or not.

There doesn’t appear to be any plans for ads with the more expensive full HD and 4K multiple screen plans.

Coming November apparently.

It amazes me that people will watch hours of ads just to save $3.

I don't watch TV because I don't like ads yet I see several films a month which bombard me with them.

Why do you watch films that bombard you with ads?

A possibly more sinister issue, will the advertisers want edits in the Netflix programs they are associated with?

To start (link):

Quote:
At launch, ads will be 15 or 30 seconds in length, which will play before and during shows and films. To help advertisers reach the right audience — and are more relevant for consumers — Netflix is offering broad targeting capabilities by country and genre (e.g., action, drama, romance, sci-fi). Advertisers will also be able to prevent their ads from appearing on content that might be inconsistent with their brand (i.e., sex, nudity or graphic violence).

I believe the introduction of ads is going to be way more significant than just ads on a major streaming service. I think it’s the portal for shoppable ads, interactive content and more ‘social like’ programming. They need a way to capture the ‘meh’ generation Z when it comes to smart TVs and I think that’s how they will do it.

I just hope the over 40’s are well catered to with scripted, non interactive content (especially films).
