The gut punch is when you put in Lost World and right from the opening scene even the opticals are treated 10x better than they were in JP1, never mind the actual 1st gen material which looks stunning. They've wrecked the black level with a harsh clip that causes some weirdness in near black tones but given how good the rest of it looks it's more of an irritant rather than a deal breaker.
I often watch films with a good mate of mine, and he frequently points out the perceived loss of quality during optical shots. He's another one who detests grain, so when grain spikes during opticals, he's quick to say how bad he believes the shot to be. So yeah, it's no surprise that opticals like Dodgson's arrival are still noise-reduced to hell.

Now we're left waiting, wondering if Universal will have another crack at JP 4K in the future. We'll definitely be inundated with re-releases that simply repackage the existing disc, but another remaster? Who knows. Maybe for 8K Blu-ray

Or maybe for 2023 anniversary, one can hope enough backlash has gone up the chain that (I) and (III) weren't received too well; and they can give us re-releases in the vein of the Field of Dreams, TBL and E.T level of ouput resulting for those two lackluster JP titles.

I'll be sucker #1 in line.

Oh the sweet sweet optimism. I wish I was capable of feeling that optimistic again

Saw a screening of a 35mm print of Jurassic Park this morning, direct from Universal. The exhibitor said it was "the best" archival print Universal has; there was a 20-30 second pause between each reel because they had to be so careful not to damage it.

I've seen this film three times at the cinema before, but on DCPs, and always thought it was very flat looking. This print was gorgeous, however--rich, vivid colors I've never seen before in any home video presentation. The tacky print shirts worn by the "six foot turkey" fat kid and Nedry in the Dodgson scene really popped; the yellow on the helicopter landing pad and Grant's denim jacket; a whole array of subtle hues in the lunch scene with the projectors in the background; lots of deep, saturated cyans in the raptor kitchen scene, etc. Even the cartoon mosquito in the Mr. DNA sequence was very striking.

I thought the 4K release of this was a disappointment at the time, but after this I think it's considerably worse than that.

I'm completely indifferent to that story. In this sense this is just our reality. I hope for a better one. But live with the current one plenty fine.

They need to release the 4K’s separate or in a better packaging cause I’m not buying a 5 movie set with the disc’s stacked on top of eachother.

Definitely, I only want to get the first one and I don’t want to pay for the rest. Plus the possible damage from stacking is worrisome.

Have you seen the fan-released 35mm print? How would you say that holds up to the screening you saw?

The guys responsible for 4K77 and 4K83 have said that Jurassic Park is a possibility for a future restoration project. Now that would be something worth funding.

Probably my favourite movie of all time, and it's such a shame it's had the short straw time and time again on home video.

The original Lost World Blu was really nice compared to the others as well. Universal inconsistency for ya!

What was this screening for and why would they bother to show it with 30 second breaks??

Nope. Do you have screens from it?

LA is full of repertory screenings. The breaks were for reel changes. They were not spliced together because that would leave marks at the beginning/end of the reels.

I know it is. As is NYC, where I live.
And I know what the breaks were FOR.

I'm just wondering why anyone would pay to sit through something where there was a break for 20-30 seconds every 11 minutes.

If the print was that sought after, why would they even lend it out? None of this makes any sense.

Exactly. If this is so pristine, why potentially have it damaged by using it in a screening?

And if it's as good as is stated... why not use that for archival purposes to color match the camera negatives when doing archival 4k or 6k work?

Maybe because nobody knew about that ahead of time? Maybe because it wasn't that distracting? Maybe it was because a screening on 35mm is rare enough as-is? The audience had a blast regardless.
