You'd be surprised at the nonsense people pull. We're just a little too jaded at times.

Uh. A 35mm screening isn't rare, especially in LA. Not at all.

And a 20-30 second gap every 11 isn't that distracting? Sure.

Where do I go to get my refund...and never go to that theater again for a screening.

Yeah, I made this up to troll some nerds on a Blu-ray forum, okay.
Not saying you made anything up. It's just that your story has more holes than the apparent film that was being projected.

Yeah, it sure is hard to believe that Jurassic Park looks like shit on home video and a print looks better.

Then I guess you'd be missing out on one of the only theaters where you consistently get to see 35mm archival prints every week? Your loss ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's not exactly what you were selling there boss. You conveniently left out the holes in your story. Case in point: why would Universal hand over their best, most pristine archival 35 mm print over to some pimpled face boy to put on a projector at a local theater for people to see? When they work on restorations (at least in the past) you've seen them handling these 35 mm prints with gloves. But let's give it to acne face over there. I'm sure it's in good hands.

I dunno. Probably because the Vista Theatre's Secret Movie Club has been doing this for over a decade and has an excellent rapport with the studios? The gaps between reels wasn't something I've ever seen before. Universal gave them The Thing last year and there were no gaps there.

There's a far greater chance that a 35mm print will look and sound like crap than anything else. Or...ya know...on the completely remote chance that it's not completely beat to hell, they make the brilliant decision to give you 20-30 seconds of blank spaces every 11 minutes to make sure it stays in such great condition.

That really sounds super worth it, as an experience. Just to make sure you are REALLY into the movie and then....reel change. A truly AMAZING experience.

No loss. At all. There's a reason why we changed from film to digital when it comes to distribution...and I'm 100% for it. Just like hipsters and their vinyl, sometimes it ain't all it's cracked up to be (pun intended, in both scenarios).

I never said it was. I see lots of 35mm screenings, and many of them do look old and faded, and a DCP would have been preferable. I only post about the ones that look remarkable. Jurassic Park looked remarkable.

Sure, and the tooth fairy pulls in about $100k a year after taxes.

UM HM. At the "secret movie club". If that name doesn't give anything away I'm Abe Vigoda.

I don't agree with your hipsters, vinyl comment. I'm the furthest thing from a hipster and I like vinyl. I prefer it in fact over cd's. And definitely over the phone. The biggest reason being is you have to actually listen to the music (what a novel approach). You have to pay attention because you have to turn it over to hear the other side. This allows you the ability to soak in the music, stop what you are doing, shut everything off, and relax. Can you do that with a cd or your phone? Yes, to a certain extent. But you can get lost in doing something and forget all about that music. You can't really do that with vinyl. I like that and it's a lot like watching a 4K UHD. You aren't on the phone or the computer when watching a movie. Nor are you doing chores around the house. You're sitting down and watching that movie from front to back. That's what vinyl is like for me and I love it.

I was thinking about going to that screening, but I wasn't sure I could make it, and then it sold out. But yeah, Secret Movie Club has been going for a while, and they're sometimes able to get hold of things the studios wouldn't lend out to just anyone.

LA theaters often get archival prints for special showings. The reason for the breaks was probably because the theater only had one projector, and they had to thread up each reel manually instead of building it up (which could have caused the damage they were worried about). I admit that's rare, but it's not unheard of.

Years ago, I saw a 35mm print of the original theatrical version of Close Encounters, and they had to show one reel at a time (with 20-30 second breaks) because their second projector broke down. I think they offered refunds, but I stayed. This was before that version had come out on DVD, so this was a rare opportunity to see it at the time.

That's a shame. There were more than a few empty seats. Thanks for backing me up

Of course. I don't know why it's so hard to believe that there's an organization called "Secret Movie Club" that shows movies in Los Angeles.

Incidentally, the Nuart has a midnight show of Jurassic Park scheduled in July. They're advertising it as a 35mm print, so I wonder if it'll be the same one.

That sounds far more believable than "we had to be super duper careful with this incredibly rare print so as to only project it one reel at a time."

I’ve seen numerous film screenings and never once had 20-30 second breaks for reel changes. They would have it spliced together or two different projectors running so they can switch and have no delay.

Once I had a mix up, where the screening had two reels mixed up and had to stop and fix the.
