Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the troll in your first half hour in the forum, then you are the troll.

That really sounds super worth it, as an experience. Just to make sure you are REALLY into the movie and then....reel change. A truly AMAZING experience.

No loss. At all. There's a reason why we changed from film to digital when it comes to distribution...and I'm 100% for it. Just like hipsters and their vinyl, sometimes it ain't all it's cracked up to be (pun intended, in both scenarios).
You got the pompous hipster mood down pat I gotta say

And if it's as good as is stated... why not use that for archival purposes to color match the camera negatives when doing archival 4k or 6k work?
Are you kidding me with this right now? You're the dude who shits on Universal pretty much every chance he gets and now you're incredulous as to why they didn't use their best archival print to match to the 4K transfer?

There are a hell of lot of trolls up in here but Cvalda ain't one of them. And I'd give my left nut to be able to attend some of the screenings he and other Angelinos have been able to attend over the years, with all those repertory theatres and the studios right on the doorstep LA is like movie heaven if you're after viewing actual prints of whatever movie.

Nope, those screens look very washed out compared to the print I saw. This shot, with the ugly print shirt, had very vivid colors:

They looked LOUD, as they're supposed to.

Late to the party again, but yeah The Lost World looks freaking gorgeous in 4K. The increase in clarity, textural precision and highlights is exquisite. I just can't get over how tangible the animatronic Rexes look during close-ups. Huge and welcome upgrade in every way.

Annnnnd back to mediocrity for Jurassic Park 3. Boy, you guys weren't lying about this being the worst of the transfers. I'm not even convinced it's a new scan. Rampant DNR, inconsistent + faded colours seriously lacking in vibrancy, inconsistent clarity, hit-and-miss grain... What a shame.

I don’t think any of them are a new scan, The Lost World was the best of the Trilogy on Blu-Ray and thus had a stronger starting point for the UHD so looks the best, the other two were always lacking on Blu-Ray and that inherent issue followed them to UHD.

They used the new master they made to prepare JP's 3D version. TLW is whatever got prepared for Blu-ray, and it seems JP3 got material prepped during the HD-DVD era and "restored" for UHD.

It's a sad state of affairs really, namely in JP's case because it still doesn't look right. JP3 is all sorts of embarrassing though.

The difference between JP3 and the first two is one distinction: JP3 is a recycled transfer, full stop. Whatever was prepped for its home release when it was first released has carried over to 4K disc. It's still an uncompressed transfer given an HDR pass, but it comes with inherent limitations from scanning and archival methods of the time. It's also not 4K resolution. It's just The Bourne Identity all over again.

JP and The Lost World might have been existing scans, but new transfers. Although JP doesn't look so crash hot, Uni assumably used the existing scan from the 3D release - not the same transfer as it doesn't contain the goof removals of the 3D transfer - and went about their remastering business from there. The scan was surely sufficient to create something gorgeous, but they missed the mark. And there's no way Uni archived a full 4K transfer of TLW in 2010/2011. So the 4K transfer is either a new transfer created from the same raw scan files, or a new scan & remaster altogether. I'm still not convinced that TLW wasn't a whole new scan & remaster.

I've crossed over into Jurassic World 4K, and oh maiiii, the grain - the gorgeous gorgeous grain. The CG stands up and looks better integrated in 4K, with a full grain structure and the benefit of HDR. I've been an apologist of this movie since its release, and my opinion hasn't changed; it's fun and technically competent, and it has a few things on its mind. And I really don't care if people don't agree

And now with my random JP revisit all done, I might need to check back in with the Mission: Impossible series in 4K. Expect to see me dropping into that thread now

Just a side note about Jurassic World... Geoffy posted photos of print damage in his original review, but I was surprised to see quite a bit of print damage throughout. The scene with Owen and Claire at Owen's trailer has plenty of it. Can't remember the last major film to have quite so much print damage.

Would've preferred it be removed. But ah well, at least ze grain is in tact and it's basically flawless otherwise.

My guess is that the UHD set was rushed in order to release it at the right time to hype up JW: Fallen Kingdom. So the mastering was just whatever they had to put out, and The Lost World just happened to be the best one of the three. Jurassic World would have been easy since it was just from the DI.

The only thing I'm not sure about is the details about the first film. You'd think it would have been based on the 4K remastering done for the 3D release, with the warmer color-grading that is supposedly more accurate to the original look. Instead, the UHD looks like an improved version of the previous Blu-Ray transfer.

Re: TLW, I was always rather impressed by how textured and filmic the BD looked, it's got something of a modern oversampled feel and even though it may not have been completed in 4K at that time - though it's not impossible - I do think there's a >2K datacine at work there, for which they may have archived the raw scan data and then reworked it for the UHD. at me complaining about the 'thin' black levels on the BD though, Uni sure did crush the shit out of the blacks on the UHD! Be careful what you wish for etc etc.

Jurassic Park and JP3 "4K" transfers are abominations. Clearly based on really old masters. Lost World looks decent but still feels more like a really good Blu ray rather than a 4K disc. Still a shameful release from Universal and there likely won't be any other chance to do an improvement

I don't understand why there hasn't been a 35 mm fan restoration, like for Star Wars, considering how badly received the Blu-ray and UHD were and how beloved this movie is. I saw there was a 630 dollar print on Ebay last year.

Edit: I'm talking about the original, of course. I only like the first two movies, and TLW already looks great.
