Not really LOTS of it

I struggled with the first one, so I know I may be in the minority there. Maybe it was the fact that it was so overhyped and it was basically Ferngully or Pocahontas with big blue people in my mind. I am intrigued though because of the technical merits on this one though.

Avatar was 3D eye candy for me and not much more.

The story about indigenous gaunt gigantesque members of the band Blue Man Group being exploited for their planet's natural resources by the omnipresent evil capitalist imperialists kind of bored me. I should have felt sympathy for the eco-friendly Smurfdorans and anger towards the wicked greedy hoomans, but the movie failed to make me care enough to feel anything for anyone.

The movie was a big screen spectacle showcasing technical achievements without any semblance of a substantial or engaging story. The acting was as forgettable as the plot. It's a movie that I own, but one that has not interested me enough to revisit despite its impressive 3D presentation.

My expectations for the sequel are the same: another big bagful of eye candy, but still an empty calorie meal. A movie being merely pretty and loud isn't enough to get me off my couch into a theater full of plague spreaders. I'll stream it in the comfort, and safety, of my home. I might buy it on disc as it would at least look nice sitting next to the original on my shelf.

Did you view the original theatrically in 3D? Certainly there was a lot of hype surrounding the film but I felt it lived up to it. Really enjoyed seeing the re-release earlier this year.

Your not alone, I passed on the purchase of the first one because so much camera motion distracted me. It did have a great sound track. I will give the second one a view when it makes it to disc.

A real test of how much I enjoy a movie is how often I rewatch it. In all of the years that I have owned Avatar, both the 3D blu-ray (owned for 5 years) and the "when will it end" extended cut (owned for 12 years), I have only watched these one single time each.

Too little time is the big problem. If one could only be able to buy time I'd probably be broke.

With some 10,000 titles in your collection it has to be a very small percentage that get viewed more than once or twice. There's only so much time.

I have been retired for over 16 years. I have more free time than most. Still, the longest life is short at last.

I did not start off with that many titles, obviously. I have been collecting movies for over 30 years. I have been amassing DVDs for 25 years, blu-rays for 15 years, and 4K discs for 5 years. I have watched a significant number of titles more than once.

Also, some of my titles are actually duplicates as one format evolved into the next. For example, I have bought the original Star Wars trilogy on five different formats over the years.

Not as many as you might think have gone unwatched and never seen. Some of the discs in my collection might be unopened, but that does not mean that I have not seen the movie. I may have seen it at the theater or on an older format.

Some of the titles in my collection were purchased with other people's interests in mind, too.

I hope to see everything in my collection at least once before I expire, but that seems increasingly unrealistic. No regrets, though. I love this hobby and I have immeasurably enjoyed watching movies and introducing family and friends to titles they otherwise would have likely never seen.

I am not a 3D guy, and I saw it at home. I know the majority of folks enjoyed it. I just am not one of them.

In my collection there are plenty of titles that I've watched over and over again and plenty of other titles that I'll probably never get around to watching. And I'm perfectly fine with that.

People who worry about whether they are getting their money's worth out of every movie they buy take all the fun out of this wonderful hobby.

Please explain to us buying something whose purpose is to be used - but never using it.

That's not a hobby. That's an obsession.

I have a large collection so I can watch whatever I want whenever I want.

I don't even keep track of what I haven't watched. When someone starts making to-do lists it turns their hobby into a chore.

People who are focused on constantly getting through their backlog are the ones who are obsessed.

Generally its cheaper to buy something as deals become available then to buy something only as you want to watch it. A lot of stuff wont ever be watched but their is also some value in having the ability to watch it if you so choose.

Also most collection based hobbies have people buying things but never using them such as, Toys, trading card / card games, stamps, cars, watches, comics, coins, books etc. Its not odd at all for a hobby to involve collecting things without the intent to use them

Most of those hobbies - you are investing - not buying. You are trying to make money. That won't happen with physical media. You'll be lucky to get 20 cents on the dollar for your collection.

All I hear is your attempt at the justification of obsessive behavior - buying movies you don't watch. That makes no financial sense at all.

The closest I can come to matching that is with the Alien set:

1: VHS - Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 (pan-and-scan);
2: VHS - The same 3 films in Widescreen editions which came out just before Alien Resurrection was released in 1997;
3: DVD - 20th Anniversary set featuring all 4 films (released in 1999).....my very first DVD purchase;
4: DVD - Alien Quadrilogy - all four films featuring alternate cuts and bonus disc for each film (released around 2003);
5: BLU-RAY - Again my very first blu-ray purchase of all 4 movies.

As you can probably tell, I adore the Alien franchise.

Can you think of a cheaper way to accomplish my previously stated reason?
