humm i want to say that you place the 4 ft plank in one of the corners creatin a right angle triangle and then place the 6ft plank from your bank to the middle of the hypotenuse of that triangle. only problem is how would you get the first plank of the other side

i know how you do it,you place the four foot plank on the 6ft horizontally, lift it over to the other side, lower it down and then place it on the other bank creating the right triangle. then place the 6ft plank as previously posted and mosey your way on over

Well he ruined the riddle.

You'd be attacking the castle. So you go to one of the corners of the moat, and lay the one piece of wood across it diagonally, a bit. Then you law the second piece from that first piece over to the other side.

I've attached a quick sketch. It's not done to scale, but you get the general idea.

Orange = castle
Green = grass/land
Blue = moat
Pink = pieces of wood

Here's another classic riddle....

A man lives on the 10th floor of his apartment building. Every morning when he leaves for work, he gets in the elevator, hits Floor 1 (the ground floor) and when the elevator takes him down, he walks out and is on his way.

After hours at his boring job, he always goes straight home. If it's a rainy day, or if other people are in the elevator, he always takes the elevator up to the 10th floor. Otherwise, he always takes the elevator to the 7th floor, and takes the stairs for the final three flights.

Why?

I may've used a bit of fuzzy wording... he doesn't work in the building, but when he leaves for work in the morning, he takes the elevator all the way down. When he comes home, he always only takes it up to the 7th floor, and walks up 3 flights of stairs (unless its a rainy day, or there are other people in the elevator, in which case he'll just go to the 10th floor).

He's a midget and/or too short to reach the 10th button. If it's raining, he can reach the button with his umbrella. If there are others in the elevator, he can ask them to press the button.

Next.

I was wondering how you'd pull this off with a round/circular moat. I couldn't see it working at first, thinking it was rounded. Knowing it's square makes just a bit more sense!

Nice sketch.

You are all wrong. Pour 4 gallons into the 5 gallon jug. It won't fit into the 3 gallon one. Why bother making it hard.

I figured with that type of post it would be implied that sarcasm is involved. I have faith that most board members would grasp that.

So do I. There's a nice thread going on in another section of this forum, though, where people aren't really interpreting tone properly and it's leading to some hard feelings. Actually, that happens pretty much all day every day on any forum.

OK, back to the riddles!
