Stand alone video scaler's are nothing new they have been around for years. Most consumers have never heard of them because they have been a specialty item retailing for $2,000 to as much as $10,000. They are stand alone video hubs that you plug all your video equipment into and the scaler rescale's the image to the resolution of your display much like an up-converting DVD player does. But this will do any component you plug into it and do a better job scaling then your DVD player or receiver could. The scaler's in most DVD players, Blu-ray players, TV's, receivers, are crap. They will upscale your video but can add ringing, halo's, and other unwanted artifacts to the picture.

The Edge is based off of DVDO's flagship scailer, the $3500 VP50pro but is targeted at consumers with a retail price of $799. The Edge can be found for less then $800, I have seen power buys for the Edge at $500. As HD becomes more abundant the need for a video scailer becomes less. If you watch a lot of standard def then something like the Edge may before you. If you watch a lot of HD then an Edge may be over kill for you.

Basically the Edge would be set to output the native resolution of your TV (lets say 1920 X 1080p) then your gaming consoles, DVD player, Blu-ray player all plug into the Edge. The Edge does have two HDMI out's so one can go directly to the TV and the other to the receiver. Now any resolution you send to the Edge that is not 1920 X 1080p the Edge will scale up. A 1920 X 1080p resolution will just be passed threw to the TV so basically the Edge bypasses your TV's internal scaler giving better video quality.

True, but with a GOOD quality video scailer you can get close.

The Oppo BDP-83 uses the same Anchor Bay processing chip as the DVDO VP-50pro & Edge use for only $499.99. The Oppo will give you a taste of what good scailing can do but the Edge is still a notch above IMO. The $2200 Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD does better video scailing then the Oppo but for $1700 it better.

That's a whole other issue and has nothing to do with upscaling.

The Salesaman tells me I need this Integra 8.9, 8.8, or 9.9 with this Silicon Optix Reon HQV video processing chip (HQV Reon-VX Chip for High-Performance Video Processing) otherwise I'm can't get a Blu-ray type picture thru my satelite provider.
You won't get a Blu-ray image at all unless the source itself is Blu-ray. No matter what kind of upconversion you're using, cable or satellite won't look as good as Blu-ray (SD programming looking like Blu-ray will never happen). I don't see the point in you wanting a receiver upscaling sources that use HDMI. The whole purpose of the HDMI inputs is to pass the signal through cleanly without any degradation or post processing of the image. Upscaling a 720p signal via HDMI would be pointless.

Not going to happen unless you're watching Blu-ray.

I have the Pioneer Elite SC-05, and one of the things I really LOVE about this receiver is that it leaves HDMI-input video alone, passing it straight through, untouched. Analog sources are upconverted with the Faroudja chip - no, not the best out there, but upconversion was not at the top of my needs).

Great receiver, though - well worth it!

the faroudja in the Pioneer Elite does a really good job with my dvd changer but as noted it is not a bluray image but is very good even @ 10ft wide on my projector depending on how well the dvd was recorded and it's source type but i did notice that only when i let my Elite bluray player do the upconversion i get deep color from a dvd whereas with the changer running through component cables and upconverted through the Elite 94TXH receiver it didn't but still is an awesome image....
