If you have the chance, buy the (Dutch edition only) 2 disc collectors edition on bluray. You get Fly Boys and some fancy documentary on the second disc.

Is this title cropped or is it correct 2.35:1 AR? The Australian release is cropped.

Never heard of this! Bizarre these films get a release and they just pass me by. I like war pictures too although I see this is in English by the looks of things (very lazy, ignorant and rather offensive). It's only £4.45 at The Hut http://www.thehut.com/blu-ray/the-re.../10063565.html (£6.99 @ Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002DMLG38) so I'll have to dip my toe in to test it. Would be impolite not to.

This looks like a promising release http://www.freerecordshop.nl/films/r...-8715664076736 as it apears to be the long cut with English audio. The German release had the long cut with very good picture quality from Warners but the sound was dubbed German only.

Lowest price I've found is here http://www.dvdoutlet.nl/en/red-baron..._from_store=nl They're English friendly, and about €19 delivered to the UK

The question is though - is the longer cut really worth an extra £10 or so?

It's a good film, but even on films I rank as the best ever made I would struggle to pay that extra amount just to see a bit more footage that wasn't intended to be in the film when it was originally released.

Indeed, Mr Baba, indeed.

I got this today and my first impression was if Merchant Ivory made a Hovis bread advert it would look like this film. Bad acting, the dialogue (and accent/accenting) and script seemed very childish to me and I struggled at times to understand what they were saying. Why the people funding this thought a German film featuring a German hero would be best in terrible English I don't know.

Still, I did watch 30mins of it and I'll try and watch the rest if I can.

Sadly, there's a shortage of WW1 aerial combat films on blu so you have to take what you can get however historically inaccurate and dramatically implausible. I'd love to see Richtofen And Brown, Aces High, The Blue Max, Hell's Angels and Wings on blu but what have we got? This and Flyboys.

Its one of the most dramatic eras of combat, men like Immelman, Boelcke, Udet, Rickenbacker, Fonck, Bishop and many more whose real lives were far more interesting than fiction, flying machines made of doped canvas and wood powered by engines weaker than a modern car that had to be positioned to chew the enemy to pieces with bullets. They established the principles of aerial warfare that are still valid today. If these extraordinary men don't inspire screenwriters who'd rather rehash the plot of Wings at every opportunity there's some great fiction like Len Deighton's short story Winter's Dawn that's ripe for filming.

I should never have bought that model Fokker Triplane all those decades ago.
