It appears that Bruno is headed for a big weekend. From Nikki Finke:

Quote:
FRIDAY AM: Sacha Baron Cohen has done it again. Based on $1.6 million in post-midnight shows in nearly 700 theaters this morning, and pre-sales for its weekend release into 2,757 North American theaters, Brüno looks like a big hit for Universal"If it holds up, we'll do $50 million," one insider tells me. "Yet this is a movie that people may or may not attend spontaneously." That's double the $25M to $27M which Universal and even rival studios have been predicting for the mockumentary's weekend debut. Others tell me that $30+M still seems way more realistic.

Bruno $14 Million on Friday

Bruno scores 14 million in Friday for a possible $35-$37 Million weekend. Ice Age grabs $8.4 million Friday for a weekend estimate of $28 Million, and Transformers 2 keep bringing the dough with $7.3 million on Friday for a weekend estimate of $25 million. Unfortunately, Public Enemies is fading really fast declining 59% from last Friday's take. From Nikki Finke:

Quote:
FRIDAY 10:40 PM UPDATE: Sources are telling me "Hard-R"-rated comedy opened to $14 million today and may come close to a $35M-$37M weekend from its 2,757 theaters. Although Sacha Baron Cohen's mockumentary about a gay Austrian fashionista (from his HBO Ali G show) received 70+% positive reviews, it only earned a "C" Cinemascore indicating moviegoers didn't like what they saw -- perhaps because of the unexpectedly in-your-face plethora of male genitalia. "The big question is does it drop on Saturday, and if so by how much?" a rival studio exec emailed me tonight.

No. 2 went to Fox's Ice Age 3-D: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs with made $8.4M Friday (-51% from a week ago) for what's probably a $28M weekend. Paramount's Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen was 3rd with another $7.3M Friday for an expected $25M weekend. No. 4 was Universal's Public Enemies, down a big 59% from a week ago for just a $4.1M Friday and a $15M weekend. Several rival studios emailed me tonight that the Michael Mann/Johnny Depp biopic of John Dillinger won't make it to $100M domestic continuing Universal's string of summer disappointments.

In the 5th spot, Disney's The Proposal earned $3.3M for a projected $10.5M weekend. Warner Bros' The Hangover was #6 with $2.9M and what should be a $9.5M weekend. The opening of Fox's teen romantic comedy I Love You Beth Cooper was overwhelmed this weekend; playing in just 1,858 theaters, it debuted at #7 with $2.3M for what's expected to be a $6M weekend. New Line/Warner Bros' My Sister's Keeper eked out $1.5M for 8th place and a predicted $4.5M weekend. Pixar/Disney's Up made $1.3M for an expected $4.2M weekend. And, rounding out the Top 10, Sony's The Taking Of Pelham 123 made $475K for probably a $1.5M weekend.

Overall, this weekend's box office looked down 5% compared to last year's.

  1. Bruno $30,426,000
  2. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs $28,500,000
  3. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen $24,200,000
  4. Public Enemies $14,111,000
  5. The Proposal $10,507,000
  6. The Hangover $9,930,000
  7. I Love You Beth Cooper $5,000,000

Bruno barely eeked out a number 1 weekend over Ice Age 3.

From Nikki Fink:

Quote:
The "Hard-R"-rated comedy Bruno opened to $14.2 million Friday but dropped a huge -37% for $8.8 million Saturday. So, with Sunday's $7.4M estimate, the movie finished with a $30.4M weekend from its 2,756 North American theaters --
Looking at the huge Saturday drop, it's possible that Sunday had an even greater drop than they are guessing. It's possible that when the actuals come out tomorrow it could be even closer.

Ice Age 3 repeats as the overseas champ with Transformers 2 #2 . From Hollywood Reporter:

Quote:
With "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" monopolizing family filmgoers from Uruguay to China to easily replicate its No. 1 overseas showing from the previous frame, it was open season for R-rated newcomer "Bruno" during the weekend for audiences in 28 foreign territories seeking raunchier fare.

"Ice Age," the 3D-animated threequel from Fox, grossed $97.9 million from 12,049 screens in 102 markets, down from the $151.7 million generated from 11,791 screens in 101 territories during its opening launch...

The "Transformers" sequel opened in India ($1.3 million from 270 sites), claimed the No. 1 spots in Italy and Korea and generated $32.5 million during the weekend from 9,165 screens in 63 territories, enough for a No. 2 ranking overall. Its foreign gross since June 19 is $364.5 million, $24.5 million shy of the original's entire overseas gross. The third-ranked "Bruno" bagged an estimated $25 million for the weekend.

Never thought I'd see Eastwood and Bruno in the same picture. At least he's still got a sense of humor.
