Funai isn't the only ones. There are three other makers (one Korean and two Chinese) that are coming but haven't announced yet.

Anyone find it interesting that this article is talking about potential from a special Chinese HD DVD variant? What happened to the four Broadcom/Microsoft models that were supposed to be here already?

So the single most expensive component in an next-gen HD player (the blue laser diode) won't be used?

I'm sure Microsoft will convince them that VC-1 encodings of those 720p for a single DVD-9 is actually superior to blue laser stuff.

This is part of the problem that Sony and a lot of the other BDA members had with the DVD Forum and the steering committee, too much red tape and messing about discussing things rather than getting out and getting things done.

Look at the BDA, it is a fast acting organisation, whenever there is some sort of news, the press release is usually issued from the BDA, but in the case of HD DVD it normally comes from Toshiba or Universal rather than the DVD forum or the HD DVD PRG.
