Post Cheap Chinese HD DVD Players to be on the way Soon

Friday, June 29, 2007 - 10:21 (GMT+99)

China prepares to unleash its HD DVD army
Filed under: DVD, Blu-Ray, HD-DVD | by :ryan |

AV Zombie: The steering committee of the DVD Forum has now rubber-stamped an agreement with the Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center of China, which effectively gives a green light to the creation of an HD DVD variant for China’s local market.

Under the agreement, the country gets a unique version of the HD DVD specification which is close enough to the standard used elsewhere for Chinese makers to develop widely compatible disc players, made inexpensive through huge economies of scale.

It’s unclear yet what the real impact of cheap HD DVD players pouring from Chinese vendors will be, but Universal’s Ken Graffeo believes it could mark a turning point in the hi-def format war. “Hardware drives software. Why do you think they give away the razor? It’s because they want you to buy the blades.”

Inexpensive players are seen as key to broadening the appeal of high def packaged media. Toshiba recently saw its player sales soar by as much as 70% when it dropped the price of its entry-level deck.

Andy Parsons, spokesman for the Blu-ray Disc Association, was less impressed, claiming the ratification of a Chinese HD DVD standard would have little relevance in the worldwide market.

Who cares. These piece of crap players will be the ones to lock-up the moment they drop in a 3" DVD-RW to watch their home movies.

Teach 'em a lesson not have bought into a dead format (hehe). Then they'll return it and buy a quality BD unit.

I really hope the price war does not come down to this on the BD side though.

All this is is what they've been talking about for ages

China does not like being beholden to foreign companies for technology, they paid for the creation of SVCD in an attempt to stave off DVD for example. They also need cheaper tech for the local market

This will be a local, 720p variant of HD DVD that no one will support because all the bootleggers will want to boot Blu-ray.

Seriously, this will be like the 4th video format they've tried to make popular, 2 never even made it to market, and SVCD only had a handful of titles.

Anyone who buys a cheap, no name player is just setting themselves up for disappointment.

Which I guess could backfire and thus making blu-ray stand out as a superior product when they get their sh*tty players home and see how sh*tty the picture quality is and how sh*tty the audio quality is and how sh*tty the craftmanship of this player really is and thus thinking that HD-DVD is just plain sh*tty and go buy a blu-ray player.

I am sorry did I use sh*tty too many times?
