Note what I said Starscream, "best value for an audio/videophile" given the two an audio/videophile will choose the Oppo 100% of the time.

I generally tell people--those who have not yet made the jump to HD--that an HDTV and a PS3 go hand in hand if/when they take the plunge. There's little point in getting a Blu-ray/HD-media center thingy without HDTV, and if someone is looking at getting HDTV, they'd be well served in getting a PS3 to really take advantage of everything their new display will be able to do.
Yes but the most people when they think of Hi-Def they only think of the picture and or pictures. When an audio guy thinks - he takes everything into account, but places a premium on the audio capabilities. I have met people just getting into BD and HDTV and they try to opt for lesser sound...until they hear a real system - then they are hooked. Thats why I like the standalone route. If you are a gamer - this PS3 is a must have - but if you are a HT-phile - you have other options. Value is only preceived by the one placing said value on a thing. In King Solomons day - silver was like stones in terms of value (Give me some of those stones now ) Value is subjective to the needs and desires of the buyer.

Not to disparage any of your perspective on this. But, there will come a point where most, and then all, TVs in the home will be HD. Audiophiles will surely endure, of course, but not everyone who adopts HDTV will also fill their homes with high-end audio gear. So, I suppose the underlying point behind my post was that HDTV will, at some point, become universal (as evidenced by the recent broadcast transition), and that was more my focus in my comment--how I relate to people, generally, who are considering the HD leap. For those who are seriously or primarily interested in audio performance, then there might be some further nuance there.

Its still $300. Better can be had for much less in the way of blu-ray players. The notion still stands that this is only a better value if you will be using the combined functionality of PS3's gaming. I bought my samsung for $200 a little bit back and it bitstreams all hd audio, and converts dolby truehd (no dts-hd).

With the slim PS3, they lost the biggest attraction for a blu-ray player, the ability to grill. Sony should have kept the heat dissipation the same.

Slim PS3 still does not have IR remote support without an adapter
Slim PS3 still does not have 5.1 analog outputs
Slim PS3 still has lobster claw disc mechanism; no tray
Slim PS3 makes barking intro sound when booting up and PS3 logo is displayed

I just bought a Sony S360 for $170 and as a Blu-ray player it does more than the PS3 can, so I don't see where a $299 Playstation is a better value...

That's like saying a swiss army knife is the best value because it has all those accessories but when it comes to being a knife, it's just a knife.

Because, as I stated earlier, that value is subjective - it's in the eye of the beholder. A person that doesn't game sees the PS3 as a waste. A person that has a substantial DVD collection and BD collection would want the best of both worlds - and there are other machines that do a better job in the upconverting world than the PS3, some cost more than the Slim, but to a particular customer - the added value is worth the extra cost. The initial question is loaded because now camps are divided into gamers and 'ophiles. Unless you are both (if you are you more than likely have a PS3 and a standalone), you more than likely gravitate to one or the other (that's why early adopters of the PS3 are now getting standalones because the prices have fallen and they meet their needs better - all you have to do is sell your PS3 ) in some cases - you could possibly get an Oppo for what you have invested in a launch PS3 - you lose nothing if you are only a casual gamer.

So, people who buy the slim to expect a slower loading time & bitstream issues as normal ?

In most consumer devices, when a newer revision comes out, it's improved and faster, not the other way around.

That was only one product that had a problem with bitstreaming. everything else im sure is fine. do you see any complaints on here, or AVS about bitstreaming? no.

As for the loading, theres another report with different results than engadget. where it wasn't as slow as they reported. only by a few seconds though. i'll have to find it for you later. who to believe? dont know. ether way the ps3 is slower than the fat PS3, nothing you can do about that.

People wanted a cheap console so they got one. the BD drive is cheaper also. regardless, its still going to sell.....alot.

Actually it wasn't from another site but by a person who has the slim and did the test on his own.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost...postcount=6678

Like he said, it is weird how games load faster but not the movies.

Yeah and I don't think it can even stream video and such.. definately not the best value.. sounds like an expensive player that lacks features.

Looks like Arcam has some bugs.. perhaps it is Arcam's fault and not the ps3 and that was the only thing mentioned in article about a problem.

Re: Arcam AVR600 Bugs

A totally unacceptable situation for a £3.5k piece of equipment! How can Arcam possibly release this product when it clearly has 'bugs' in it, I will never understand.

This was suppossed to be Arcam's big foray back after producing a string of 'not-so-great' products and looks like they've screwed this one up too!

Looking around on-line, it does appear that the Arcam AVR600 does indeed suffer from firmware bugs.
