A local theater near me plays legacy movies! I have watched Jaws, Robocop, Halloween, Alien, Predator, Terminator, Blade Runner, Full Metal Jacket and many more.
The problem of course is they are original prints so the quality is lacking for most of them. That being said it still is quite an experience to watch them on the big screen. http://mayfairtheatre.ca/ They are having James Bond and Lord of the Rings movies this month. I saw the original Halloween back in '06 when they were showing it on 50 screens for 2 nights only. That was just awesome. I love watching old classics on the big screen...especially one's I was too young to see when they originally came out.

This is a good idea if the cinema does it for free or for a greatly reduced cost. I agree, there's nothing quite like seeing your favorite films on the big screen - but the cost of going to the movies is so ridiculous now, that you might as well just stay home and watch the Blu-Ray versions (where applicable.)
Still, if a theater is showing a classic film on the big screen and the price is right, why not? |

This is one of those subjects that makes me feel lucky to live in New York City. There's always theaters playing older movies, though a lot of times they are very limited runs or even one day showings.
I don't get out to nearly enough of them, but I was lucky enough to see Seven Samurai at Film Forum a few years back. It was the first time I ever saw the film, which made it particularly special for me. Also saw 42nd Street and the original King Kong at Film Forum last year around this time as a double feature (two movies for the price of one!) That was really fun. |

Thought I would reopen this thread, since next week I am taking my daughter to see E.T. on the big screen. I have noticed in the last year more of these sponsored by AMC and Fathom Events. Last weekend was Indiana Jones movies.
I am still hoping someday to see Alien or Aliens on the big screen. I think they really missed an opportunity on this when the prequel was released this year. |

I've done quite well this year with seeing older or re-released films at the cinemas. Star Wars: Episode I (it counts, it's 13 years old!), Casablanca, Beauty and the Beast, Pulp Fiction, Alien, The 39 Steps, Jaws, Robocop, Total Recall, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Rebecca, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Notorious...
Have still got Rear Window, the Birds, Psycho, Lawrence of Arabia, Coronos, the WIcker Man, The Exorcist, Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining coming over the next month or so. And a Lord of the Rings triple-bill in December. |

![]() The screenings of WOz and Singin', etc., were to show off new anniversary restorations and hype the Blu-ray, but think the chains and audiences lost sight of that, and think, "Wow, a real old movie at the cineplex!" As a result, we get whole festivals of 70's Golden-Age movies, restoration or not, and while the lure is attracting the new kids back, most of these are the same movies you could have rented all this time... |

Saw Wizard of Oz at a local theater a couple of years ago - it was a great experience. Hoping to see 2001 in Cinerama at least once more, and I will go to see the original three Star Wars, LOTR, Bogart, or Hitchcock movies if they ever show up at a theater.
