Now I tried multiple hdmi cables one from monoprice and monster's expensive stuff. I tried hooking up my ps3 directly to my television and bang works with no problem. Do you think it may be a bad hdmi board or something? If so this sux because I haven't even owned the 606 a year yet. I got it from Circuit City while back.

I really dread calling Onkyo because of all the horror stories I've read on here about their customer service. I am currently saving for a new AV because I like the others I've seen with THX etc... like the 807 but in no way can afford to get it now
The problem is the HDMI board. This unit has been having problems with this for a good long while. I had/have this same unit and it took me almost 4 months to get it repaired, at which time once I got it back, I used it for a week or so to make sure it works and then went and bought a Pioneer reciever to replace it. I will not buy an Onkyo product again.
If you go on AVS forum under recievers, you will find many, many people that have had a problem with the hdmi board and their repair process. Good luck!!

I just made a whole new thread about my issue, but it seems like this thread could be very relevant to my problem, so I will repost it here. Pardon the copy and paste; mods please feel free to delete the new thread I made.

I've been having a problem with my 360 for several months now. It has been getting progressively worse and is now unplayable. The video output will black out momentarily, yellow lines will appear from top to bottom, and sometimes the screen will go completely snowy. This problem used to just occur for the first few minutes the system was on and then go completely away, but it is now constant.

The steps I have taken to try to track down the issue and fix it, now have me completely baffled. My first thought was that it was the video card on the XBox, so I got a whole new 360. It has the same issue. My next thought was that it was either the HDMI cable or the HDMI input on my Onkyo 606 receiver, so I pulled the HDMI cable from my PC, which was working fine, and plugged it into the 360; still the same issue. I had an epiphany about a strange video problem I had a couple of years ago where the hd dvd drive connected to my 360 would allow video to play but not in-game video, so I unplugged the newer hd dvd drive... still the same issue. My final thought was that it had to be the 360 power brick since that was the only thing I had not changed (it's a pain to get to behind my 12ft ent unit.) I went through the massive effort to change the brick and still have the same issue.

The set up is as follows

360, blu-ray, sat receiver and PC all plugged into an Onkyo 606 receiver via HDMI, and then a single HDMI cable out to my Samsung DLP. The blu-ray player, sat receiver and PC all play fine. I can't get behind my receiver to swap inputs without dismantling my whole GIANT ent unit (see pics in set up link.) However, unplugging the PC HDMI and putting it into the 360 is essentially the same as trying a new input.

I'm to the point where it HAS to be the receiver, but I am leary of buying a new receiver since the input currently giving me problems with the 360 seems to work fine with the PC. Does anyone have ANY other ideas?

I am very interested in the Onkyo TXNR1007 because it has dual simulataneous HDMI output, which would be great for using my PC for entertainment during parties; allowing me to send the same A/V to both my lving room and my game room. I can get it for less than 1K and it's an ability I've desired for quite some time now. But I am leary since this Onkyo is less than two years old. Does this issue seem to be limited to the 606?

I don't know how useful this is especially if you want it to never happen again, but I've had some times where I got some snow when selecting my HDMI for blu-ray, or the HDMI for the ps3, Now I only get "No Signal" messages, but like I did for the snow, I'd just select a few of the other inputs and then once I went back to my ps3/blu-ray it would work.

Maybe you can try that when it happens, when it happens just switch to the vcr, dvd exc. and then switch back and it should go through.

Or if you want it to never happen call up Onkyo lol

I can confirm the issue is indeed a 606 issue not an issue with any of your equipment. I took my 606 in 2 days ago the original HDMI board did not have enough capacitors to handle the load over a good time. My local repair shop has confirmed Onkyo is paying for new updated HDMI boards for your units that should resolve the issue. Thank god I purchased an extended warranty for my 606 as this is all being handled by my retailer as well as Onkyo, word of the wise I would recommend anyone who has not taken there receiver in to do so now and get this issue resolved ASAP.

Changing the video output on my 360 to 1080i, as someone suggested earlier in this thread, has resolved my issue; for now at least.

I would stay away from Onkyo!! I had the same problem with my 606(as many others have had) with the HDMI board. I do believe that Onkyo knew about it and there was a recall for that problem, but was not published. I was able to get mine fixed thru warrany work, but took over 3 months to be completed!! Took it local, then after 5 weeks, got it back, and then returned the next day as still did not fix. They had to send to Onkyo regional repair center in NJ, where it sat for many more weeks until i have to write the president and service mangers of Onkyo. As soon as I recieved the unit back, I made sure that it did work( and looks like it had been droped as there was a bent corner), I went out and bought a new Pioneer and am in the process of selling the Onkyo!! I will not be buying any type of Onkyo equipment again.

Yeah that's what I did for my PS3 before I took my 606 in for repairs. 720p or 1080i the signal was good. 480p and 1080p was a total mess. My PS3 was just fine when connected directly to my TV. I connected a DVD player w/HDMI to the 606 and it had the same results when set to 480p...crap

After getting my 606 "repaired" now only 1 of the 4 HDMI inputs works correctly. I'll have to drive to the repair place again..

Onkyo is garbage.

I have to keep turning the receiver on an off until it gets the signal. It seems like the receiver is seaching for the signal but cant. I called Crutchfield for support but they said this was not a known issue. Has anyone found a solution for this yet?
I finally couldnt stand it anymore and sent my receiver off to Crutchfield's Onkyo warranty repair center. The guy I talked to there said that the HDMI switching was a common problem on the Onkyo receivers....nice. Had to spend $80 to ship the damn thing off to New York.

I gave up on my 606..sitting in the back of my truck...

After I was told that since my 606 was no longer under warranty that I'd have to pay for any new repairs that weren't done under the original repair, I wouldn't have it back for another 8 weeks and 4 more 1 hour trips to the repair shop...I decided it wasn't worth it anymore. POS..worst receiver I've ever owned..

Picked up a Pioneer 820 for $286.00 at Best Buy.

I always buy budget receivers. Even though I have never bought an Onkyo, the prices look too good to be true sometimes. I just got a Sony cause it has Bravia-Sync . Works pretty well with the XBR and PS3

looks like i've been sharing the same problems as you fellas. here is a copy of the letter i sent with my 607 for repair (for the 2nd time). i don't have a local service center so i've been having to ship it to denver.
Quote:
The following problems did not occur until I received my product from warranty repair (Onkyo model TX-SR607). See previous JOB ORDER #XXXXXXX (copy attached).

Problem #1

HDMI inputs 4, 5, 6 will not detect a signal unless a 2nd device is providing a signal to HDMI inputs 1, 2, or 3. HDMI inputs 1, 2, 3 function as expected. Only inputs 4, 5, 6 seem to be affected.

Example: I want to play a game on my Xbox 360 which is connected to HDMI input 5 "GAME". The Onkyo receiver will not display a picture or produce sound unless I power on my Playstation 3 which is connected to HDMI input 1 "BD/DVD". I do not lose signal after I power off the Playstation 3. I just need to turn the Playstation on and then off to force the receiver to detect the Xbox 360.

I have experimented using three different HDMI connected devices: Sony Playstation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, and HP notebook PC model 8710w. All three devices have been tested using all combinations of HDMI inputs. Note: when I try to use the notebook PC using inputs 4, 5, or 6 the display on my notebook PC will blink until I power on a device using HDMI input 1, 2, or 3.

Problem #2

Display flickers temporarily when I power on/off a device connected to analog inputs/outputs. The display will also flicker when i plug in/unplug a device using analog inputs/outputs, regardless if it is powered on or not. This seems to only occur when I am using HDMI output to the display. Analog video outputs do not seem to be affected.

Example: I will be watching a Blu-ray using my Playstation 3 connected to HDMI input 1 "BD/DVD". When I power on/off my subwoofer (Yamaha model YST-SW305 connected to output "PreOut Subwoofer"), the display will flicker temporarily.

Example: I will be playing a game on my Xbox 360 connected to HDMI input 5 "GAME". When I plug in/unplug my HP notebook PC to/from the "AUX" analog stereo input (front panel), the display will flicker temporarily.

Problem #3

HDMI output video goes blank intermittently after approximately 30 minutes of use. The display will go blank for less than 2 seconds. It happens more frequently the longer it is on. Audio does not seem to be affected but it's possible I can't detect it because the issue occurs so briefly. This is the same problem addressed on previous JOB ORDER #XXXXXXX (copy attached).

I have experimented with two different HDMI connected devices: Sony Playstation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360. The problem occurs more frequently when using the Playstation but it occasionally occurs with the Xbox 360. This problem does not happen when either device is connected directly to the display (Panasonic model TH-42PZ85U).
i'm probably just going to sell my 607 after i get it back from repair. this was originally a refurb direct from onkyo anyway. i'm thinking about buying a new 608.

I have been having issues but now no more OSD and no more component use on my 606. Sucks! I could tell it was getting bad ...my PS3 is fine via HDMI but anything utilizing component (my Wii, my PS2, my xb360) not working.

I've read online of many others experiencing this problem with the 606 and other models but I figured I was fine although the last month or two, I would have to turn off my receiver on and off and hope the signal would pickup for the components and it would work. But today nada. I did try the reset as well but it didn't work.

OSD is sporadic, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. So, I have to use the receiver's display.

I still have HDMI capability which is fine but no more component through the receiver...have to run it off TV via those component switchboxes now.

Default Onkyo 606 HDMI Issue Solved Using Work-around

I also experienced no video coming through my Onkyo 606. I found an entry from witheygull who discovered that switching settings from a resolution of AUTO to a setting of 1080i allowed video to come through. How wonderful! I was about to scrap the Onkyo 606.
Thank you Witheygull!

You are quite welcome. I no longer have the 606 (I switched over to a Denon AVR-1910), but I'm glad to know that some of my frustration-born tinkering was of use to you. I hope your unit ends up faring better than mine did.

Well, after looking on YouTube, it looks like many were able to do the fix...

I haven't soldered anything since buying a modchip for the old Playstation...but I'll need to give it a try if I can get this 606 to work.

Unfortunately, I failed in the repair. Part of the problem was removing the five wires and they kept coming out. Not much wire to strip from and now not getting sound. Oh well....need to buy a new receiver I guess.

Unhappy Onkyo Problems

I've got the same issue. Running PS3 and Virgin + media box through Onkyo 606 into a Sony Bravia w series tv. Keep getting "no signal" display and it takes around 10-15 mins of constant switching hdmi selects before signal is picked up on either source. 1 year out of warranty !

Spoke to retailer, redirected me to Gemserve who do the technical support in UK for Onkyo. Acknowledged that it's a common fault and to replace parts and labour plus postage, i'm looking at £117 plus VAt (@20%)!

Not happy at all so they have now referred me to Onkyo and I'm now waiting confirmation of whether they will do a "good will" repair for free. I think if it is an inherent defect with the system (other foums report a faulty batch being sent out between 2008-2009), it's the very least they can do but we'll see shortly what their after sales support is really like. If they don't play ball, going to scrap it and buy a yamaha or something similar that supports 1.4 hdmi.

The fact that you see so many people on YouTube trying to fix their 606...it's a defect that Onkyo doesn't want to man up on! Ended up purchasing a Pioneer VSX-1021-K and gave the broken Onkyo to my father. He could still use the composite and regular cables I suppose.

My 606 is doing the HDMI issue. I've read on AVS that Onkyo is now confirming that it is a known issue and doing out-of-warranty repairs. So I contacted them first before attempting it myself.
