![]() Great tread...Ben Hur should be coming soon. The English Patient was released already. However, it's bare-bones. |

Looks like Olivier's Hamlet is coming out in the UK in October. We'll see if it's region free. Unfortunately All Quiet on the Western Front isn't the original. |

I do think Slumdog was over hyped but not as much as The Dark Knight. That movie is EXTREMELY overrated. Don't get me wrong, I love The Dark Knight but it certainly was not the best film of the year. I really believe, as does the Academy and many others, that it was only as big as it was because Heath Ledger died. Although I can say that I believed it did deserve a Best Picture nomination over The Reader, it or WALL-E. This year I see the movie Precious winning Best Picture.

IMO, Frost/Nixon and Benjamin Button were the weakest of the 5 nominated. |

I liked The Reader but after watching it, I came to the conclusion that it didn't deserve to be parred with other films for Best Picture. I haven't seen Frost/Nixon but it really isn't my thing. I actually Benjamin Button was even better than Slumdog in a way. I also liked The Wrestler very much and praise Mickey Rourke's performance but I couldn't have seen it with a Best Picture nomination. But WALL-E and The Dark Knight deffinately deserved a nomination. Both of which led to the amazing decision to increase the Best Picture nominations to 10! Which delights me very much as Up will certainly recieve a nomination. |

Langella was really outstanding in this one. He's a magnificent actor.
His stage credits are terrific. I think he's also a great film actor as well - does anyone agree? Langella became Nixon . . body language and all . . . |

The only year I disagreed with was '98 Saving Private Ryan! Still waiting for that on blu. As for '09, my prediction was 'Shutter Island'...but since it's been delayed... ![]() |

Well with the academy going back to 10 films for the best picture category, i think we're going to see a few fan favourites or box office champs sneak in. That doesn't mean they will win and it doesn't mean that just because a movie like transformers 2 hits 400 million its guaranteed a nomination, but i think the change is a direct result of the Dark Knight's poularity and critical praise
I think the academy after last years fan/critic outcry as well as having really low ratings are going to try and appeal to the mainstream more next year, my 2 predictions are Watchmen gets a best picture nom, and neil blomkamp gets a best director nom (what he did on district 9 with just 30 million dollars and several actors including the lead who had never acted before is simply amazing) Neither of those nominations will win though, but that's the academy's plan, open up the best picture category to more mainstream films so that TV rating go up meanwhile the same boring films will be the ones that win I just really hope that if Nolan and co can produce a third Batman film of the same quality as TDK, that the academy will do like they did with peter jackson and give the film the awrd based more on the series then just the one film |

Boring? I don't agree with the oscars, but it does seem that your implying that only certain types of films win. Which simply isn't true, war movies have won, comedies have won, romances have won, etc. That being said I find the oscars to be a joke (look no further then 1997 and 1998) where Titanic won the oscar, and then Shakespeare in Love not only won the oscar, but Paltrow won for best actress (I don't think Paltrow gave a poor performance, but it didn't go above and beyond and there where many more deserving actresses that year). (Yes, I think I was more looking for an excuse to show my dislike for the oscars then actually reply to your post.
