Bitstreaming does not really offer any adavantages. I have the Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player. It can bitstream HD audio, but I intentionally set it to PCM. It is a lot more convenient and the audio is as good as bitstreaming.

For additional information, read A Guide to Home Theater Audio Codecs. It has a sticky in Audio Theory & Discussions. Scroll about half way down and you will find a detailed discussion of bitstreaming. This is a short paragraph from there:
Quote:
The downside to sending the advanced audio codecs in native bitstream is that you can only send the movie soundtrack itself. Any secondary content, like menu beeps or the audio that accompanies Picture-in-Picture interactive features is not part of the original bitstream and will not be transmitted. Audio commentaries and alternative-language audio may also be affected, depending on how the disc was authored. The only way to send the additional content is by allowing the disc player to perform the audio decoding itself, during which the player mixes the new material on top of the movie soundtrack for transmission in either PCM or analog format.

I went back in tonight and reset from bitstream to PCM. I tested both on Transformers and there was no difference so I'm gonna stick with PCM as it works very well with no problems.

Am I OK to manually check those, since the PS3 can stream them?

And should I put my Onkyo on "Pure Audio", Direct, or Multi-channel?

Thanks.
Sylin, just make sure you have all the PCM options selected. Make sure HDMI Audio output is set to Linear PCM.

Thanks, Crack--helpful as always! I actually just ordered a Marantz SR5003 so I'm looking forward to playing with that tomorrow.

I have a similar issue with my Marantz 8002 and PS3 Slim:

I'm having handshake issues with both picture and audio. I've spoken to both Marantz and Sony about this. It's when, in bitstream only, I ffwd or rwd I loose both picture and audio for a few seconds then it comes back. I reset the PS3 to default, tried 2 different HDMIs, different HDMI inputs, 2 PS3 slims but I can't try another Marantz unfortunately. I know Pioneer AVR are reported to have problems as well. I notified Marantz here in Canada but haven't gotten a straight answer. Same with PS3.

And YES both PS3 and Marantz have the latest firmwares.

The links below show the differerences between the Panny 60k and PS3 Slim. The Panny worked without a flaw but as soon as I used the PS3 get the picture/Audio drops.
