Agreed.

I'm not against remakes as a hard and fast rule by any means. But some filmmakers' work, especially some specific films, cannot in any way be replicated.

Suspiria is a specific and special work, which is a product of its time and also the technology in use at the time.

Quote:
Suspiria is noteworthy for several stylistic flourishes that have become Argento trademarks. The film was made with anamorphic lenses. The production design and cinematography emphasize vivid primary colors, particularly red, creating a deliberately unrealistic, nightmarish setting, emphasized by the use of imbibition Technicolor prints. The imbibition process, used for The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind, is much more vivid in its color rendition than emulsion-based release prints, therefore enhancing the nightmarish quality of the film. It was one of the final feature films to be processed in Technicolor.[3]
I mean, come on. How in the hell are they going to replicate the look and feel of that film today?! It's totally absurd. Yeah, right:

Honestly, all for it. The original is a film the deserves a wider audience and appreciation, even if that means people only check it out because of the remake.

I'm quite surprised it is getting a remake, considering the Giallo is quite a niche sub-genre in Horror, and there haven't been too many of them in recent times. Refreshing to see if I'm honest.

Man, whatever one thinks of the story or anything else, it's truly one of the handful of most beautiful films ever made. That Technicolor process created just insane colors. It truly is an experience.

Because of the cinematography, the Technicolor, and just the overall look of Suspiria, it's easily one of the two or three films I wish I could see in the theater sometime. Of course, it's impossible. I'm not even sure a print still exists.

The original is un-****-with-able. Utter gorgeous from start to finish. Even if Christopher Doyle was on board this would suck.

Correct.

The technology doesn't even presently exist to re-create anything remotely close. And if you can't be bothered to do that, then why the hell do it in the first place?

As I said before, I'm not against remakes. But something as special as this film, or say, Gone With The Wind, you simply don't mess with it. It would be like making a color, sound version of The Passion of Joan of Arc. WTF is the point?!

LOL at Pineapple Express being horrible.

I love Suspiria as an exploitation-style 70s horror film. The music, the camera work and the production design are magnificent.

But let's be honest: the story, the dialogue and the acting are mostly horrendous.

...we're not talking about Citizen Kane here.

I want them to, I think it would be hilarious. It will be terrible and I might never watch it, but just the idea someone out there thinks it's a good idea amuses me to no end.

I'm a huge fan of the original but anybody complaining about the choice of director because he made Pineapple Express and a few other similar toned movies need to check out the rest of his filmography. DGG is a quality director with style and substance when he isn't making silly movies for a pay check.

I'd personally prefer a remake never be made but if it's going to be done, I'm happy it's DGG and I'm confident it'll be good. Not likely to be in the same league as the original but good enough to not spoil the original films reputation.

I only caught the first 20 minutes of the original. I only had my copy for a short amount of time and was in a situation where I could only view with using headphones. I had to turn up the volume for the dialogue, but yet couldn't bear it because the music was then so loud it hurt my ears. Can anyone tell me that this is the way the movie is supposed to be, or did I have a bad copy or something?

In any regard, from what I saw, I can definitely tell there is no way in hell this movie could even be properly replicated. It certainly was not a film for mainstream audiences, and yet you know they would try to make the remake as audience friendly as possible

The music is loud, yes. But I don't remember really having trouble with the dialogue.

And yeah, not only can they not replicate the look or filmmaking prowess, they probably would complete botch it by trying to appeal to a large audience. And a Suspiria that's changed in order to appeal to more people isn't Suspiria in the first place. As I keep saying, WTF is the point?

It's not like they couldn't come up with a similar idea and run with that. And it's not as if this is a film that has such a humongous following (anymore) that the name alone would sell tickets. Well, not many anyways; only among hardcore horror aficionados, and that's a pretty niche group. I mean we're talking about a nearly 40 year old Italian Giallo horror flick. It's not like your barista or waitress has likely ever heard of it.

Like I said, you can make something basically the same, call it something else, make it in a different style (say, something that mass audiences could/would go see), do a good job, and see how it turns out. This, however, just makes no sense whatsoever.

I'm all for a remake of this for curiosity's sake, i really like the original movie but i'd be happy to watch an update with the same story. Bear in mind that this is probably just a retelling of the story and will in no way attempt to ape the distinctive style of the original.

Chloe Moretz to Star in 'Suspirira' Remake

Chloe Moretz is set to star opposite Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, and Mia Goth in Frenesy Film Company and Mythology Entertainment’s new retelling of the classic horror pic “Suspiria.”

“A Bigger Splash” helmer Luca Guadagnino is directing. Amazon Studios has acquired the worldwide distribution rights and is financing the production. Amazon could not be reached for comment.

The film is a passion project of Guadagnino’s who has wanted to do a new re-imagining for some time and has been at the forefront of getting this remake off the ground.

David Kajganich is penning the script based on the pic written by Dario Argento and Daria Nicolodi.

Based on the 1977 film from Italian horror master Dario Argento, the movie follows a young ballet dancer who travels to a prestigious dance academy in Europe, only to discover it is a front for something far more sinister and supernatural amidst a series of increasingly grisly murders.

Suspiria is a Latin word for “sighs.”

The film will be produced by Frenesy Film Company, Mythology Entertainment, First Sun Films, and Memo Films. The producers on the project are Guadagnino, Brad Fischer, Kajganich, Francesco Melzi d’Eril, Marco Morabito, Gabriele Moratti, William Sherak, and Silvia Venturini Fendi. Mythology’s James Vanderbilt, Paul Deason, Massimiliano Violante and Carlo Antonelli are exec producing.

Not feeling this, but at least Luca Guadagnino is an interesting choice. If the footage for it looks good I'll check it out.
