Another Remake on the Way. The shooting begins next year for Suspiria.

Tacked to the end of an unrelated story in the trades is first word that David Gordon Green’s remake of Suspiria will begin shooting next year. This consciousness-altering bit of movie news was discovered by The Playlist. Curtsy. Green, who has managed to maintain his indie cred (Snow Angels) and establish box office pull and mainstream cachet (Pineapple Express), is currently in Ireland helming the Danny McBride stoner fantasia Your Highness for Universal. Last summer, I covered a rumor that Natalie Portman was cast as the lead in his Suspiria flick; as with today there was never a solid follow-up. However, Portman was later cast as the warrior princess/McBride’s unlikely love interest in Your Highness and previously expressed interest in the role.

In the time since that casting rumor, Portman also landed the lead in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, a thriller that shares surface-similarity with Dario Argento’s original Suspiria by way of the world of ballet/dance. Released in 1977, Argento’s film is a staple for cinephiles due to its almost garishly indulgent color palette, a legendary instrumental rock score by Goblin, and grotesque but artsy murder scenes. When it comes to the remake mill, there are few exceptions worth justifying, but Green is outspoken enough about the state of cinema and has sounded enthusiastic about his new take.

Green also has a few very cool non-remake projects on his plate: an adaptation of Steve Niles’s Southern horror comic book, Freaks of the Heartland, which we discussed with him last year on the set of Eastbound & Down; and possibly a semi-mysterious take on ’80s Amblin blockbusters called Mr. Machine, which would star McBride as a “robot [built by science fair nerds] that get a life of its own. It’s like… I don’t know, a Short Circuit zombie movie.” We’ll update more on Suspiria when appropriate

I love the original too much to see this be remade. You have to be kidding me that the guy that directed the horrible Pineapple Express is working on this? Then again, which is worse another movie by this guy or being subjected to another remake by Platinum Dunes?

Love it or hate it (this remake) the good news is that the probability of a blu-ray US release of the original will increase ten-fold.

The only good thing that will come out of this is a blu-ray release of the original movie. I'll happily upgrade the DVD.

Let the 13 yr olds see the remake and think it's the coolest movie ever. Maybe seth rogen will be in it to top it off.

Yea a blu release would be very nice if that happened. No good can come of remaking this. It would never be as good as the original....

Ugh, this makes me sick. I know that I am doing a remake of a films that is in the public domain, but it's a film that probably not a lot knows of these days. Suspiria on the other hand, its widely known. David Gordon Green is a hack. And I find it funny how he had the nerve to bash Kevin Smith yet he makes s**tier films than him. The Sitter is hands down worse than anything Kevin Smith has made in his entire career.

Smith still has talent, always has. David doesn't. I keep thinking Pineapple Express was a fluke, because everything else he's done has been awful...i absolutely hated Your Highness and The Sitter...anyway, not really looking forward to this. not because it's a remake, but because David hasn't done much that I enjoy. I'd be very surprised if I ended up liking this...

Pineapple Express is no fluke. That movie sucked big time and is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Please release the original Suspiria on blu. I also would rather have an actress other than Portman as the lead that resembles the original actress and looks as good as the original. Portman is pretty but that chick in Suspiria was knock out beautiful. Got Em!!

I love the original Suspiria. It's definitely in my top 20 films of all time. That said, Natalie Portman makes Jessica Harper look like a dog.

Not in my book. Natalie is pretty in a sophisticated way while Jessica has that girl next door look. There is a difference. Got Em!!

Yeah, that is good news. I'll have been waiting for a US release due to the contrast issue in the Italian/UK release.

David Gordon Green is a great director and does a lot more than movies like The Sitter. i for one am interested in seeing him do a horror movie, i just wish it wasnt a pointless remake.

‘Suspiria’ Remake Finds New Life

David Gordon Green’s Suspiria remake went dead back in 2013. This past April it was revived again as a television series, although I suspect that will never come into fruition either.

But, after all of these years, could the remake have found new life?

Green, best known for films like Pineapple Express, Joe and George Washington, joined William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold of the Crave B-Movies Podcast where he revealed he’s looking to have someone else direct.

“I’m actually hopeful that it’s happening with a great Italian director that I had breakfast with last week,” he stated, basically revealing that they’re looking to find another director to take the reigns. In fact, one of the holdups years ago was that financiers weren’t confident Green could pull off a genre film (seriously).

With a new director comes a new story, which i why Green decided to share some of his vision for the remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 classic that took place in a fancy ballet academy that’s a front for something far more sinister.

“I wrote it with my sound designer. I love Argento’s film and we wrote a very faithful, extremely elegant opera, basically of [Suspiria],” said Green. “I don’t mean musical opera, but it would be incredibly heightened music, and heightened and very operatic and elegant sets. Isabelle Huppert was going to be in it, [and] Janet McTeer. We had an amazing cast of elegance and prestige that we were engineering for it.”

Natalie Portman and Orphan’s Isabelle Fuhrman were both at one point attached to Suspiria.
