You should get Roman Polanski's Repulsion, it's on Criterion with a transfer that's about a billion times better than the original DVD release, and it's just a really great and creepy movie. Doesn't hurt that a young Catherine Deneuve plays the lead role either.

Or check out his first two films, Badlands (1973) with Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek about a serial killing couple on the run (Tarantino admits he stole the idea) and Days of Heaven (1979) with Richard Gere. Days of Heaven was called by Roger Ebert to be the most beautiful film ever shot.
