I don't think people understand that coating isn't really the issue with the blu-ray discs, because I think the more logical questions we should be asking is the type of protection they are using. If you add more coating to the disc, I can't see how that will help the scratch resistance if the coating is scratched itself. The whole idea of protecting a disc by simply coating it with a thicker layer of something it already has seems like a waste of time. The caddie system would be the obvious choice for protection since there is nothing that can touch the disc itself in order to scratch it. Basically all I'm hoping is that they think about releasing two differant formats for Blu-ray users ... one in a caddie ... and one without a caddie. (Let the people decide, not the company)

Dude, get over it, it isn't going to happen. Caddies are history, no matter how much you whine and complain.

Furthermore, it is not about adding more coating to the disc, but moreso adding a specialized coating that even DVDs or HD DVDs don't use that is highly scratch resistant, finger print resistant, dirt resistant, ink resistant, etc.

Move on.

Default disc caddies

ultra density optical (UDO) is cartridge "blu-laser" technology and currently has a 30GB capacity with 60GB media to come out late this year. if data protection via a caddie is what you desire, then UDO is the answer. very expensive, but how much do you value your data? www.plasmon.com

I think a lot of people are missing the big picture.
So a few companies might put some super-coating on their discs to offer protection superior to what CDs/DVDs have now. The problem is all of those who don't. And to compete with those- because a lot of people see price before quality- the name brands will start becoming lax on their protection to lower prices.

The fundamental problem with this new media is that it allows laziness; it allows companies to put poor coatings on their products. If thin covers were a required component of the media, a good level of protection is already ensured. Even a cover as weak as paper would be a guaranteed vast improvement over what we have now.

For those who complain about covers: CDs are about 1mm thick. I have a plastic CD case that's only about 2.5mm thick. Is that so big a difference? Normal storage of the discs could even take place in such a cover. I, for one, have a very bad habit of not putting discs back in their cases so this would be an incredible improvement for me.

I might not agree with a lot of the concepts behind UMD discs, but atleast Sony had the right idea with the protective covering.

Thanks to Rikaelus for giving a meanful responce to something as important as the coverings to discs! (No Thanks to marzetta7 as usual) I realize this isn't the end of the world to not have coverings on the disc, but as Rikaelus said in the following Quote it allows for lazyness and quite frankly tendancies to be CHEAP!

I also wanted to thank h3dtech for the tip on 'UDO', I'll check that out to see what it's about!
