That movie didn't hit BD till 2-1/2 years after this thread's last previous post. Talk about necroposting...

From OP till now, correct. I counted 2-1/2 years from the last post (Jan 2010) till A Trip to the Moon's release (June 2012), which obviously explains why no one thought of it before the necroposter.

Yes, I come from the future with news.

This topic will forever be discussed as we'll no doubt be getting older moves made available time and time again. So it's hardly "necroposting". You should be thankful that I found this thread.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm glad the correct answer to this thread has finally been revealed. I've been waiting for years.

Like I said though, it'll no doubt change eventually. But as of right now, it's A Trip to the Moon. As far as I know anyway, if anyone knows of one that's older then please let me know.

True that Voyage to the Moon wasn't listed before the resurrection of the thread, but 1964?

I find is strange that many of the films listed on this posts came out 50 years after some of the earlier films. Many of the films on this thread came out in the 40's - 60's

Some of the earliest films on Blu-ray (now) are

Voyage to the Moon (1902)
White Slave Traffic (1913)
Les Vampires (1915)
Birth of a Nation (1915)
Intolerance (1916)
Poor Little Rich Girl (1917)
The Saphead (1920)
Nosferatu (1922)
Battleship Potemkin (1925)

It is rather strange.

There's also The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) and Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927). Again though, both released after Jan 2010.

Yep. My oldest too. They start to look good in 1915 though.
It's really amazing though.

Mine is La Grande Illusion (1937) but soon may be The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920). Wish more German expressionist movies would come out in N. America.

A Trip to the Moon is the world's first motion picture from 1902. It's only 15 minutes long and it actually took 12 years to restore. And yes, this is available on bluray.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/A-Tri...Blu-ray/44961/

It doesn't get any older than this.

wow, 12 years - that's crazy. That is the funny thing about these old movies - a lot of stuff was still hand done like the color so if you want a true restoration, it takes time.

I'm sure you're right about the blu-ray, but what makes you think that this is the world's first motion picture? Films began in the late 1890's. There were many, many short films before this.

Not sure about the 12 years thing either. The back of the Blu-ray case says that a nitrate print was found in 1993, restored and then premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011. That's 18 years. But you're right about Blu-ray not getting any older than that, it'll be a tough one to beat.

The link you provided has no review btw, here's the review - https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/A-Tri.../36593/#Review

Definitely recommended if you love your Sci-Fi or if you enjoy old movies in general.

I got the information about the 12 year restoration here... http://www.english.rfi.fr/france/201...s-colours-1902

Forgive my error on it being the first film. But it certainly is AMONG the first without counting a 2 second short of a man sneezing, or another short of a horse running. It was certainly ground-breaking, but I stand corrected...it wasn't the first.

This source claims it took more than 12 years - http://www.flickeralley.com/catalog/...-moon/hardgood - which matches what the back of the box says. Lets just agree that it took at least 12 years to restore, shall we?

You're right - it's certainly an early one, just not the first, or the first to tell a story. For example, the first version of A Christmas Carol was in 1901. It was originally in the 10-12 minute range. The existing 5 minutes are on YouTube. There were many short films like that around the turn of the century.
