Why is everyone amazed by the numbers!!!!!??? your joking right? no really? wow.

Let me help you out.

Sony redesigned their console, dropped the price to $299, and advertised like crazysince september. everyone expected the PS3 to be on top.

I really hope PS3 wins december.

Walmart, Amazon had a $100 dollar rebate on the xbox arcade. I watched Amazon and it shot straight to number 1. Not surprising. What is surprising is still after all these years we still have no Gran Turismo 5. Sony gave the holidays to Microsoft in the US by delaying Gran Turismo 5. Just so predictable.

Walmart and Amazon. You're talking lots of consoles. MS said they'd make sure they'd stop the PS3 bandwagon and they did. Sony bent over by delaying Gran Turismo 5.

MW2 was exclusively marketed as pretty much a 360 exclusive. People would come in to buy the Xbox 360, thinking it could play mw2, then told them otherwise, which one you think they picked when they knew the truth.

Xbox 360 has the money and advertising on the hottest games with the xbox 360 logo at the end. Its pure marketing genius.

Sony is marketing the console, not the games. Hard to enjoy a console without games.

Edit: I wonder how many of those 360 sales came from pirates whose consoles got banned.

I dont get your first line? people thought 360 could play MW2?

Anyway you make some good points but with all that advertising and a cheap price you would of thought it would've sold more.....no no not more cause 700k is really good compared to last year, but i thought for sure PS3 would outsell 360.

Yes, im sure those bannings helped to.

I guess what I saw at Costco was the reality then.

They had "deals". The one on 360 had the elite and crappy games at $299.

The PS3 had a game and a remote for $329.

The Wii was at $199 with a game I think.

Both the Wii and the 360 were largely going out faster than the PS3's there.

It's always about the perceived price. Sony should -not- have thought that the 250Gb bundles would win it, and rather tried to tackle super deals under the $299 bar.
That is -if- they wanted to lose more money per console just to make bigger sale numbers, of course.
Afraid to say that the HDTV + PS3 deals or the well priced 250Gb bundles were not that attractive -for mass sales-.

Really a shame when you have a $299 Slim that's awesome and a marketing ad campaign that's been the best in ages.

This being said the situation is leagues better than at the end of 08.

From the advertising, it made MW2 seem as it was a Xbox 360 exclusive, therefore thinking they could ONLY play it on the Xbox. People are very naive, and don't do any research.

The xbox had the stronger game and marketing lineup in terms of potential sales. COD4MW2, Halo, Forza 3. $100 rebate at Walmart and Amazon. Sony were almost entirely relying on Uncharted, Assasins Creed 2 marketing and the Bluray effect to sell consoles. Bluray isnt yet the big differentiator. The big price worthiness isnt mainstream. I dont think anyone should be surprised that the Xbox outsold the PS3. I think it's common sense with all available evidence.

Forza 3 for 360 and Assassin's Creed 2 positioning for the PS3 will have been for naught on either console.
AC2 sold 2x on 360, in line with the installed base, and the big exclusive of MS on 360 in November doesn't even scratch the top 10 of sales.

I bet that Sony regrets not pushing harder to have GT5 out now ... It could have made all the difference.
This being said, and given the circumstances (MW2, $99 Arcade, no big exclusive), the PS3 still did very well imo.

Xbox 360 user base is almost 2x that of PS3 in NA, so the attachment rate is the same. That and many people have bought PS3's as blu-ray players. I have 4 that don't get any games bought for them.

Yes and it makes me wonder if Sony will cut alot of there 1st party studios to release the funds and do the same "tricks" in going after select high profile multi-plats?. But this exclusive marketing must be infuriating when Sony's money is in creating original exclusive games. Though this "trick" all seems so very short term to me.

Sony won't cut 1st parties, its the only reason they are still in this fight. Microsoft can't advertise like this forever. I also believe the influence of friends is a major factor, who doesn't have a 360. If I'm buying a console, its to play with my friends, so I pick the 360. The year early jump was huge.

No way in hell is sony cutting their first party studios so they can go after 3rd party games thats also on a another console.

Their first party games are the ones thats setting the PS3 apart from everybody else.

Low price will always triumph and that hurt the ps3 from the start. The average gamer may be in their thirties, but millions of gamers from grade school kids to teens add up. They buy whatever their friends have at the moment, plus they get about fives games in a year.

Sony is spending resources on three gaming consoles currently, it makes you wonder how things might have been different if Sony just supported ps3 and at a $399/$499 price at launch. Can't turn back the clock.

Very true, but its a NPD thread, not a worldwide figure thread. I wouldn't have the same arguments then.

Easy to find ones are:

LTD - worldwide

360- 34.13 million
PS3 -27.8

(these are highly unreliable, but give a good estimate)

For the Year only: (N/A only)

System Lifetime Year to Date

X360 17.32m 3.46m

PS3 9.76m 2.97m
