I would rather have the extended versions than the theatrical ones. So I think I'll wait until they come out, even though I can't wait to add this trilogy to my BD collection.

I wouldn't say that I was angry about this. Just not very impressed. The films need those additional sequences. New Line know that many will feel obliged to buy the blu rays twice over. But hey, if I was a capitalist money making studio, I would do exactly the same thing!

Well over 100 mins of excellent material is added to the 3 extended cuts. In total. Enough for a seperate film!

Edit - found detailed info on all additions:

Fellowship pt 1.

Fellowship pt 2.

Two Towers pt 1.

Two Towers pt 2.

Return Of The King pt 1.

Return Of The King pt 2.

I'll be waiting for the extended editions, which should almost definitely be out by next Christmas. Having seen the EE's so many times now that going back to the Theatrical cuts will be like watching highlights! And as Brilliant as the LOTR films are, the length of them means I don't watch them too often, so the extra wait is no biggie. Shame on New Line for not releasing both versions simultaneously though (or even together on "branching" BD discs) but I didn't expect anything else

Anyone know if there will be any more additional scenes added in for the EE blu release compared to the dvd's or are they exactly the same cuts?

Ah, thanks & thanks.

Seeing as I barely remember anything from when I last watched them I might go ahead and get this anyway as won't be too bothered if I'm not understanding it. Plus I doubt that the EE's will be out until The Hobbit or something so a long way off, maybe.

I have no problem with WB/New Line doing what they did the first time around - releasing first a theatrical version. I have a big problem with the fact that this time we'll have to wait almost 2 years for the Extended editions!
There is ZERO reasons why we have to wait till "The Hobbit" comes out, if and when.
And to those who want to get the TE nonetheless - at least don't preorder or buy the moment it comes out. Make them sweat a little...

Who will be doing the UK release? Will it be Warner or EIV? Didn't EIV lose all the rights?

I reckon that if as many people as possible boycott buying the theatrical BD's (which won't happen - many people will cave) then New line will be pressured into bringing forward the release date of the EE's to recoup thier loses.

I think most average people just see 'Lord Of The Rings' and want that. The EE's are for enthusiasts, i'd wager good money the theatricals outsell the EE's by a long, long way.

Maybe it will be different on blu-ray. Blu ray currently still seems like more of a niche market for the more serious film collectors as apposed to the standard dvd purchasers mulling around in the stores. Many blu ray purchasers might also feel that they have double dipped enough in the past and will hold out. The EE versions may well outsell theatrical on this HD format. Maybe anyway....

oh look!

a "vanilla" edition of the trilogy!

perfect for those of us who dont want to double dip...

this way we ONLY get 3 discs only the movies.

we can watch the extras on the extended set we'll buy later on

True.
It's like King Kong on DVD : first you had the theatrical cut during summer and then, the director's cut for christmas... :s

I'll wait ( I will watch them @ a too weak friend's place ).

What makes me laugh is that they have trailers for the extended editions on this release. That's just like saying "by the way, we have a better version of these films to release, but first we wanted to make some extra money. sorry but you bought the wrong one, but thanks for giving us even more money anyway."

That's how it seemed when I bought Fincher's Zodiac on it's first dvd incarnation.

When it starting advertising the forthcoming director's cut version, I felt very annoyed.

At least that longer cut of Zodiac was the version on the bd.

Can anyone find out if the single released films will be slipcased or even steelbooks in US / CA?

Or is it a waiting game....
