I agree! They look so weird, I separate my BD's and DVD's and I cant even begin to imagine putting a DVD case in with my BD's. I know, i'm a bit anal about those things

Eventually I'll cave in and buy some Criterion stuff (it's just too good to pass up), but I see myself printing up Custom Covers and putting them in standard cases.

I'm thinking economies of scale has some to do with the lack of specialty packaging. If they are going to spend the money to produce more creative cases, I'm thinking they want to make sure they sell a certain amount of copies. And since Blu-ray's market penetration isn't that big it's more of a gamble than with DVDs.

I may be misremembering, but I don't think specialty packaging was that common the first couple of years for DVD either.

I was working at BB (Video Department no less) back when DVD was first breaking into the market and from what I remember it was all basic and standard (and took about 2 three foot sections at most).

I've always dreamed of a large, open source project where resized versions of commercial cover inserts and user designed alternate inserts could be gathered. One could enter in the UPC of the release and the size of the case, 7mm, 12mm, and so on and get a properly sized image for printing an insert with the cover art the user likes most and all of the info on the spine and back cover that would be on the standard commercial insert.

As I said before, I like to display my collectable packaging, but I also Like to move my collection, the discs themselves, into alternate packaging that takes up the minimum shelf space for the number of discs. A resource like this would allow people to dump or store the original packages they don't like (I put mine in storage in case I want to sell the title someday), and keep their releases in much smaller, but consistent for those who care about a uniform look on their shelves, form of packaging. I don't care so much about consistent look, I just want to be able to stuff the most movies in the least space because of the size of my DVD and BD collections.
