Are we suppose to conclude (and accept) that this is a phenomena in which one can only be sent back in time and not forward?

Boy, this is a fictionary mess.
It was clearly explained in the movie.

Pay attention people:

Spock clearly stated that it was a time distortion, what was seconds for Spock was 20+ years for Nero. So it stands to reason that since Nero went first, that resulted in the mining ship going back in time further than Spock.

as for Spock Prime not fading away, keep in mind he didn't "travel back in time" in the strictest sense. As soon as the mining ship crossed the threshold a new reality was skewed off of the prime line.

Meaning the prime line continued as it would have and spock prime had all the interactions and events that core trekkies know about up until the time when he tries to save romulan. Him being in the past of the new timeline doesn't affect his existance in the real time line.

so no paradox. at least not involving that.

I'm not buying it. Just because Nero & Company passed through first doesn't equate to being back a greater delta. The distortion is originating at the same tē for both Nero and Spock Prime, but this would have to imply that the distortion, while observed at tē is continuous, in this reality is discontinuous resulting in Nero going to t' and Spock Prime going to t" (such that t" minus t' is ~27 years.

But this doesn't answer my speculative question. If the distortion is continuous, or linear, then one cannot say for certain it is, in their reality, random. For instance, Spock Prime could have been sent back 27 years before Nero. And none of this doesn't suggest time AND space are locked.

In this event, it would be interesting to develop some more Red Matter, create another distortion (which they did at the end of the film!), and see where that results. I'm also not buying the manifold (poly-) universe notion.

As I suggested to jadedeath, the non-linearity and the observed tē --> t' & t" suggests a non-continuous nature of the distortion. I would have thence taken your note and concluded that Nero and Spock Prime would have to had ended up in two different non-prime lines, each with segregated conditions.

I think you could be correct. Selective adoption when infant Romulans are seeded to Vulcans might be the trick, but this still produces a condition of ramping up from 10K to 6 Billion in order to reconstitute their original numbers.

What they need is the Biggest Little *****house on Remus.
