Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Philadelphia
Christian Bale - American Psycho, The Prestige
Edward Norton - American History X, Fight Club
Ben Foster - 3:10 to Yuma, 30 Days of Night
Natalie Portman - Leon, V for Vendetta

That is all I can think of for now. I know there are more.

ROBERT DE NIRO
because he's done so many brilliant films. Al Pacino is very close.

Other notables include Jack Nicholson, Harvey Keitel, Michael Douglas, Daniel Day Lewis, William H Macy...I could go on forever

Yes, Daniel Day Lewis, Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Clint, Jack, DeNiro, Pachino, and many more. Excellent talent. I just wanted to mention Mr O'toole. Eight times nominated for Best Actor, and a part of some of the very best movies ever filmed.

Eight noms, zero wins... total robbery. The man is a legend.

I agree, it's a travesty I don't normally pay much attention to the Academy Awards, but they are some measure of the skill of his craft.

I hope he'll eventually receive one, presumably posthumously. But you never know with them.

Oh, they've already given him some "lifetime achievement" award, but it's not the same thing, it doesn't make up for getting shafted.

I didn't know that; at least he got some acknowledgment from the Academy. But you're right, a "Lifetime Achievement Award" is not the same as winning by vote count in the year(s) that you excelled in your craft.

Why?

JB, did you see The Changeling? She gave a tremendous dramatic performance in that film.

Johnny Depp- he is the only actor left in Hollywood. He throws himself into each roll and BECOMES the character he plays. He has been a wide variety of genres as well.

Even the recent Burton films that weren't so good Depp still did a great job with his roll. Its Burton who's going to the well 1 too many times now a days.

The only actor left in hollywood... is that a joke? Daniel Day Lewis is just one example of an actor who does what you described, and he's a much better actor than Johnny Depp.

Plus, Depp can be "a bit too Depp" in some of his roles, imo.

I haven't seen anything with Daniel Day Lewis other then "The Crucible" and "The Last of the Mohicans" when they made us watch them in High School. I own "Gangs of New York" but have not watched it just yet. Hes only done 27 films in his career. Most of them I haven't even heard of, but I guess thats due to my personal interest.

I also love Brad Pitt, Al Pacino, Christopher Walkin, Tim Curry, and Ed Norton.

But something about Johnny in movies like

Edward Scissor Hands
Pirates Trilogy
Donnie Brasco
Fear and Loathing
Whats Eating Gilbert Grape
The 9th Gate
Blow
Secret Window
From Hell
Sleepy Hollow

Hes not type cast like many other actors.(Pacino, Cruise). Each character is completely different, the voices the mannerisms, the creativity he puts into each role. None are dry and boring because whether its his body movements, tone of voice or a combination of both he always manages to entertain.
