Default PS3 HDMI port died? - It's alive alive. now

Until today, I had been using an HDMI cable for my PS3. I proceeded to switch the output to a component cable for a short time. When that was done, I went to the menu to switch it back, only to discover it would not switch back.

When I try to change it to HDMI, the picture shows only a fiant hint of green and a fuzzy movement much like an empty channel. It doesn't say 'no signal' or anything, just that green screen.

I tried resetting the output via holding down the power button, but it still won't do HDMI afterwards. Why it would die after a short move to the component cable I have NFC.

The HDMI cable still works with the DVD player, so I'm nearly convinced that my PS3's HDMI port broke during the transition. But how? And is there any chance it didn't and this can be fixable without sending it in for month-long repair work?

Did you manually set the PS3's video connection & resolution or did you leave it on auto detect?

Of course, there is also the main switch (for the power supply) in the back of the PS3. You could try that.

I tried all those things. I set the connection manually to HDMI and did the display reset using the back switch and holding down the front power. Nothing yet.

Are there actually component cables (still) plugged? If you have component cables still plugged in maybe remove them and try resetting - perhaps some autodetect/reset issue with both types of cables plugged in.?

Funny you should mention that.

I tried that last night and got nothing. Even got a detection error when I tried to set the audio output to HDMI.

Today however, it all seems to be back to normal. I fired it up without the component cables in, and it worked on the 2nd try.

The warranty is still in effect, and I actually set up a shipping box delivery, but I can cancel it now.

Thanks to everyone here; still, this was all very odd.

I did the same thing once. I had to memorize how to get back to the settings blinded since the screen was choppy to set it back to the hdmi setting. Although it is a lot more difficult to do this with the more options. I'd try to find a picture of the menu of options for the xmb for the update you have to get to the hdmi setting. Always switch back to the cable you are going to use before unplugging the current one and switching to the other one. You can't do that....I'd say take it back and exchange it.

So does resetting the system that way also re-format the Hard Drive? I haven't had occasion to do anything drastic yet, and I haven't backed up my HDD either... Still need to pick up an external USB HDD.

Yeah I don't think you have a "real" problem that will become permanent down the road..just a particular scenario that occurred.

Good to know your up and enjoying.
