monitor audio RS8 new $1100
kef iq90 new $1500

any thoughts??
Kefs, You will need a musical receiver like a Marantz or Harman and even Rotel seperates. They are bright speakers that can sound very good, but they need soemthing to warm them up and smooth out the brightness. However detail and clarity are excellent.

Monitors, very dynamic, Jason says get the GS10s, he is probably right. The RS6s are really nice, so I would take it the there is better detail and range in their other speaker, if that is even possible... Great speakers, probably some of the best I have heard.

Imagines, I am sure they are awesome. But I haven't heard them personally.

I would say to look at the Dali, but I know you don't like the looks. However their sound is very musical and quite awesome. For a straight 2-channel I give them lots of credit.

Dynaudio has the Focus 110s that would be really nice, perhaps for about $1500 they would be something to look into also. The Focus 140s would be even better but closer to about $1800, I believe.

Totem was suggested too above, haven't heard them, want to really badly, these are supposed to be pretty musical and quite dynamic given their single driver design.

Jamo C 807s are supposed to be pretty nice speakers also, they are too Danish made and musical.

Big Daddy recommended some full range speakers, and he knows something about something....

Hello Ryan,

I did not mean to be pompous. I obviously should have worded my statement better and I apologize. I was merely trying to find out how much your max budget was and maybe you could search and audition for more brands. The reason why I had said you have the upgraditis bug bad is because that's exactly how I thought it was....After you got your power cord....now you want speakers! Now that's upgraditis.

I was actually waiting for your response after my post but fell asleep only to find that this thread had gone awry

Without knowing your max budget, I could not give you my honest recommendations which is why I asked initially.... But for 1,500 you can get the Revel concerta F12(floor standers) or Focal 714 http://www.musicdirect.com/product/80438 or the 716 http://www.musicdirect.com/product/80566

I just about fell off my chair when I saw how many times the Totem Sttaf's were mentioned. This does not happen often!

As a Totem Sttaf owner I can certainly testify to the fact these are very wonderful speakers. However, I might also suggest you seriously look at the Totem Arro (if you can). They are less expensive and many prefer them over the Sttaf's. It's certainly a good way to save about $500-$600.

The reference made to the Klipsch Heresy's is also a solid one. I know, I owned a pair for well over 10 years.

Regarding DIY speakers, well I have no experience with them, but I have no doubt that the suggestions provided by Big Daddy and enthusiastically seconded by prerich are worthy of consideration.

I should also add, that speakers like Totem, Dynaudio and Focal/JM Lab have fairly similar sound signatures. As such, if you have heard one, you should go and audition the others too.

Good luck in your search!

John

Might I suggest a pair of LSA LSA1 bookshelf speakers modified by underwoodhifi. They sell the standard modified units for $950 and the LSA1 signatures modified for $1750. I have B&W 705 bookshelf speakers right now. Those run about $1000 on audiogon used. Or B&W 805's for $1500-2000 used on audiogon.

Default musical speakers

I'll second John on the Focals. Call me biased, but I bought them specifically because I wanted a more musical set of speakers. How big is your room, what kind of music are you going to be listening to and what's your budget? I am an audio dealer and these are questions that HAVE to be answered before someone can just go recommending any speakers. Also, are you wanting full range or do you plan on adding a separate sub?

well, the MAs are very nice at this and so are the Dali Concepts, I would say the Dali's are warmer sounding then the MAs, but I would lean towards those two for what your asking for, from the speakers that I have personally heard. I don't think either needs a sub for 2-channel music.

thats the thing with your types of music, a lot of speakers can handle it well. and so it just comes to what sound you want.

What did you like about the B&W 683's that the others didn't deliver as well?

Jim just released these. Definitely another speaker that I would add to your solid list.

I will say again, Quad 22L fits that bill perfectly! Warm sound - they image like all get out, and they have a beautiful finish. You can find them used on Audiogon for $950.00!!! Sorkman14 owns them and I have had the pleasure of having them in my home for a while

i just like the full sound on the b&w speakers, they were warm and fulfilling in the sound. they sounded great with the type of music i listen to. i also like the way they look. the bass was incredible. it was an A+ in my book. the PSB imagines were a close second, the only thing was they sounded a bit bright to me.
