Default Rage Looks Better on PS3 (Compression with 360)

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/53976

i can only access the URL from work, not the article, so I don't know what it says, but I read in another story, that I cannot find, that this game will be shipping to PC and Mac on both DVD and Blu-ray disc. I don't know how true that is, its just what the story said. This would mark the first time a system other than PS3 got a blu-ray game, which is a pretty big milestone.

Default Carmack: Rage Will Look Worse on Xbox 360

http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/ne...box-360/?biz=1

Quote:
John Carmack revealed at last night's QuakeCon keynote that Rage will look worse on Xbox 360, reports Shacknews. He stated that the reason for this is that the compression techniques necessary to fit the games onto two discs would degrade the visuals; it's not a matter of processor power. According to Carmack, including a third disc for the the Xbox 360 would be unfeasible because of royalty fees and he hopes Microsoft will make a concession.

Currently, Rage is set to release on PS3, PC and Xbox 360, with the PC version likely to see a DVD and Blu-ray release. Carmack also noted that id isn't looking into releasing Rage or Doom 4 via online digital distribution, possibly due to size issues as well.

Default Lowest common denominator strikes: Rage scaled back

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/new...ssion_xbox_360

Quote:
Carmack and co. already tempered the force of this blow at QuakeCon, but a punch in the mouth is still a punch in the mouth, no matter how many fewer teeth are scraping the bottom of your glass of milk afterward. Said id Software lead designer Tim Willits at the Austin Game Developers Conference:

"The PC is limitless in the amount of data you can put on it.The PS3 has about 25GB. But the Xbox 360 roughly has 6 to 8 GB of data. We're hoping we can squeeze the game down to two discs for the 360 version."

"I wouldn't say the overall story was changed in any way in order to fit on the Xbox 360 version," Willits explained, "but how the player experiences Rage's story has been altered."

Foremost, he said, the game's overall structure has changed significantly. Whereas before, Rage featured "several" wastelands in which players could run race and gun, now only two remain. Don't worry, though; the two wastelands have been split into multiple, hardware-friendly instances, so it'll be just like traveling through multiple areas!

Somewhat perplexingly -- though probably in order to wave the game out the door by "When it's done" instead of "When your great grandchild begins balding" -- id elected to take the razor to all three versions of the game, as opposed to merely the Xbox edition.

This, it would seem, is only the beginning of a very slippery slope.

This is exactly why an Xbox version of FFXIII scares me. It just won't be the same game as was intended.

I guess we'll find out in 2010! lol....wait....

I was gonna say the same thing-- this was the reason why so many people thought losing exclusivity was bad when others said "Why does it matter?" This is why. Still, since the Ps3 version of FF13 is supposed to be done first, we can hope it won't be gimped. And if the US version is gimped, then I'll improve my Japanese quickly. Still, this is going to happen more and more over the next few years I'd guess. Between Xbox's hard drive issue and lack of disc space, even discounting processors, etc., the problems will only increase in the future.

I still wonder why there's going to be an XBox version when its going to look like crap due to lack of data. It might look like a PS1 game. And they better do a good job for the PS3 version.

The PS3 version of FFXIII will NOT be affected by hte 360. It wont be developed until after they do the PS3 version

What i don't get is that: there is no developer out there that has it in him/her to fully get every potential out of every console or pc. So what is the big deal dat in this chase the 360 looks the worst

It wouldn't be a big deal, but an 800 pound gorilla doesn't like being told its crap is inferior and will look worse, so the 800 lb gorilla throws a fit and sends some money and POOF! The games look the same.

Update: Willits has informed ShackNews that no content has been cut from the game:

During my talk today I mentioned that we originally wanted to have around 5 or 6 smaller wasteland environments but later decided instead to have 2 larger wastelands. Mostly because we were going to be shipping on two DVDs for the 360 and felt that it would play better with one large wasteland on each disc so there would be no loading between wastelands. Not loading levels while you drive around is a much better decision regardless of platform.
There was NO CONTENT removed from RAGE because of the 360--NONE AT ALL. Moving from multiple wastelands into fewer but larger wastelands was a far better decision and is actually giving us more gameplay in the game.

We feel the 360 is a great platform and will provide a fantastic Rage experience. "

Guess all the fear mongering wasnt true.

His comments came out so bad that from a sales/marketting perspective they demanded a retraction.

As a result, whether the retraction is real or if they original story is the truth is impossible to determine.

Hooray sales-speak.

True but Square decided to build the game around a multiplat engine instead of an engine designed around the PS3. IMO that is what upsets me, they always knew they were going to put it on X360 and basically lied for the past couple of years.

If they would have just built it on an engine designed only for the PS3 I'm sure it would come out better (and quicker).
