Coming soon means nothing. The movie version of Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian has been confirmed for two years and nothing has changed. Malick's films each take at least two years before release, with each film receiving at least a year of post-production and editing. There was six years in between Badlands and Days of Heaven, twenty years in between that and The Thin Red Line, and then 6-7 years until The New World. History proves the case here.

The documentary has been made concurrently with Tree of Life. He sent photgraphers to scour the globe several years ago and has gotten visual effects artists to work on the prehistoric scenes. This isn't speculation, like many other things. The original screenplay of Q was a minotaur dreaming of the evolution of the world. Voyage of Time is what that translated into.

The New World made about $30 million worldwide on a $30 million dollar budget. So after you calculate in Blu-ray/DVD sales and rentals it made some profit. Having said that, The New World certainly wasn't the critical success a lot of people were expecting. It wasn't Malick's best received film by a long shot.

I've been patiently waiting on Tree of Life for a long time, and I'm really hoping it is back to Malick's The Thin Red Line and Days of Heaven masterpiece type of level.

Default Terrence Malick’s ‘The Tree of Life’ Scores PG-13 Rating

Quote:
Here’s some good news: the MPAA has evidently rated The Tree of Life, the long-gestating movie from Terrence Malick, and awarded it a PG-13. The good news isn’t so much the rating (I don’t really care what the film is rated) but that it is finished to the point where it could be submitted to the board for consideration.

We’ve been wondering about the fate of the movie, and Rope of Silicon noticed not only that the MPAA had rated the film, but that distributor Apparition is not listed. Rather, production company Cottonwood Pictures, Inc. is noted. That might not mean anything, but it’s not difficult to read the listing as slightly significant, given that Apparition has been undergoing a lot of upheaval lately, and Tree of Life was the only film the company was left holding.

The MPAA confirmed that this is Malick’s picture and that it was screened in the past couple of weeks, but could not provide a running time or additional info. All we’ve got with respect to the rating is that it is PG-13 for “some thematic content.”

We haven’t gone back over the details of the film in a while, but here’s an old synopsis that was floating around quite a while ago. Note that the actual film could have changed quite a bit in the past year Malick has spent editing — this is a very old writeup. Remember what happened with The Thin Red Line, where entire characters were removed from the film, among other changes.

Quote:
Our picture is a cosmic epic, a hymn to life. We trace the evolution of an eleven-year-old boy in the Midwest, Jack, one of three brothers. At first all seems marvelous to the child. He sees as his mother does, with the eyes of his soul. She represents the way of love and mercy, where the father tries to teach his son the world’s way, of putting oneself first. Each parent contends for his allegiance, and Jack must reconcile their claims. The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering and death. The world, once a thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth.

Framing this story is that of adult Jack, a lost soul in a modern world, seeking to discover amid the changing scenes of time that which does not change: the eternal scheme of which we are a part. When he sees all that has gone into our world’s preparation, each thing appears a miracle – precious, incomparable. Jack, with his new understanding, is able to forgive his father and take his first steps on the path of life. The story ends in hope, acknowledging the beauty and joy in all things, in the everyday and above all in the family — our first school — the only place that most of us learn the truth about the world and ourselves, or discover life’s single most important lesson, of unselfish love.
That’s all pretty heavy, non-specific stuff. More specifically, it features Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain as the parents of Jack, and Sean Penn as the adult Jack.

There’s still doubt that the film will appear at the Venice Film Festival this fall, but with this small step towards real distribution, we’ve got one more reason to hope we’ll actually see the film this year.

Default Fox Searchlight Picks Up Terrence Malick’s ‘The Tree of Life’ for 2011 Release

Quote:
Over the past week there have been rumblings that Apparition was shopping the Terrence Malick film The Tree of Life to new distributors. There was no word on who might bite, but for the past few days it has seemed like something was about to happen.

And now Fox Searchlight has announced that it will distribute The Tree of Life, which will be released on a to-be-determined date in 2011.

So: no Oscar possibilities for Malick’s movie this year, but that’s not really a worry to anyone but Oscar pundits. I’m just happy that we’ve got real, reliable word that the film will actually see release. This could also mean the effective end of Apparition, which laid off most of the rest of its staff this week. (Remember a year ago, when Apparition seemed like it might be a viable new force on the indie scene? How quickly things change.)

In the company’s press release, Fox Searchlight Pictures Presidents Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley said, “Terrence Malick has crafted a deeply moving, keenly observed and magisterial film…Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and the entire cast’s performances are simply amazing. This is a signature film by a signature filmmaker and we are proud to be releasing it.”

And here’s the film as Searchlight describes it:

Quote:
From the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, The Thin Red Line and Days of Heaven, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950’s chronicling the journey of the eldest son, Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn), through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years - trying to reconcile the complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith.
The only thing here is that, because Searchlight is most likely going to treat the film as a serious awards contender, we’re not likely to see the release date be any earlier than next fall. So most people will probably have to wait another year for The Tree of Life; we can just hope that it plays at Cannes and other festivals earlier in the year.

haha well, you did argue against Miral, which is confirmed to be out in December and The Way Back, which while confirmed for mid-January, will almost definitely be getting a limited the last week of December.

I'm not bummed to be honest. I've been waiting for five years. Imagine waiting between 1978's Badlands and 1998's The Thin Red Line
