Awesome movies. The Meaning of Life is actually out on HD-DVD, and it's not a bad transfer, so hopefully it will get some Blu-ray treatment soon. Holy Grail is of-coarse, DVD only at this time. Life of Brian is on Blu-ray though.
Anyhow, am I the only one out there who likes Meaning of Life more than Holy Grail? Meaning of Life: Shocking Humor, Philosophy, Religious Humor, Music Humor, Satire Holy Grail: Historical Satire. Life of Brian: Have not seen. What's your favorite Monty Python? And one more time, am I the only one who likes Meaning of Life more than Holy Grail?? |

Even the Pythons admitted "Meaning of Life" was a mistake, didn't have its main idea clarified, was too derailed by individual writers' contributions (the Crimison Assurance Company was supposed to be one 30-second scene), and badly edited by the studio (they originally wanted the Eric Idle waiter scene to play over the end credits).
...And if they hated it, who am I to question their judgment? Last edited by EricJ; 03-21-2010 at 07:53 AM. |

I love Grail and Brian but Meaning of Life introduced me to the Pythons. So for nostalgic reasons it goes to Meaning of Life. Some of the funniest set pieces in the history of film and who can argue with the song - Every ***** is Sacred.

And don't forget the sex education scene w/ John Cleese, where a bed pops out of the wall and he does the wife in front of the students in his classroom!

Holy Grail is just awesome.
Meaning of Life is funny, but just an endless stream of sketches, some of which just don't work. Life of Brian is very funny as well, but it's just to smart for it's own good, I'll have to hunt it down and watch it again but at the moment, Holy Grail is just the best, to me! |

For me it has to be Life of Brian. I think it's more coherent than the others and succeeds in its general objectives, i.e. the satirisation of organised religion and blind faith. To me it is the Pythons' most direct and pointed film, though I suppose Meaning of Life does come a close second in the regard, with its critiques of society.
That isn't to say that I don't like Holy Grail. It is a great film, with some great, eminently quotable, dialogue - "I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries." Oh, and who can forget The Holy Hand-grenade of the Antioch... |

1. Life of Brian (The most meaningful of the bunch-see above-Quote) 2. Meaning of Life (also features many unforgettably funny scenes-can't wait for it to be released on Blu) 3. Holy Grail (haven't seen it in a long time, but loved it when I was younger) |

I'm a big Monty Python fan and would like all their films on blu, including And Now For Something Completely Different and Live At The Hollywood Bowl. Not sure how good Flying Circus could look on blu since it was mostly video taped and few parts done on 8mm film, I'm sure the current A&E DVD's are more than adequate for Circus.

Even though I know that Holy Grail will trump in this poll, Life Of Brian is by far the best in my opinion. It's far less reliant on the usage of "silliness" for laughter. And, what "silliness" IS used often has some cerebral context to back it up... aside from the alien intermission bit. I still scratch my head everytime I see that part. |
