This pretty much proves that Toshiba is pricing other companies out of the middle tier of the market and losing money on every unit by doing so. The only non-Toshiba players you will see are units like this Onkyo and Dual format players from LG and Samsung but I will not see anyone else produce an HD DVD standalone in the 500 or less range quite simply because there is no profit in it given the low amount of units sold and price pressure from Toshiba.

onkyo will put out a blu ray player very soon which should be a nice player. They have to much at stake not to. They will want a blu ray player to go along with their receivers.

Onkyo makes good stuff. The only problem here is that HD-DVD keeps pushing the low-price player argument and this definitely doesn't fit that strategy. So much for the "Blu-Ray players are expensive" comments

The executives at Onkyo must be distressed to see what is happening in the market. Not only is BD outselling HD-DVD, but Toshiba is putting severe price pressure on the hardware side. They should be nervous.

Just in case people are expecting it soon, "Fall" means by about December 21st. Hopefully we'll get more specifics at CEDIA.

the price is also telling, especially if the design's based off one of toshiba's players.
this is probably more closely related to the real cost to manufacture one of toshiba's players + reasonable markup. |

I don't think their optical disc player business is big enough to be really affected by this one way or the other, but they should be concerned from the perception from the growing Blu-ray user base. For instance, I have an Onkyo home theater system now, but when I'm upgrading, I'm choosing another brand because of this. enjoy gandalf ![]() |

As for Warner/Paramount -- well, I don't think those are relevant comparisons but if I have a choice of buying one movie studio and one only, I'd look at Sony or Disney first. I like their commitment to quality. ![]() enjoy gandalf ![]() |

Onkyo decided to take the HDDVD road. The site says "This player has been introduced to realize the potential of high-definition HD DVD content". YEAH RIGHT! Check it out.
