Default PS3 too cheap? Can this one be a decent player?

Ok, I know there a dozens of threads about the PS3 here ... what I would like to know is :

The PS3 is comparatively cheap. Costs half of what some stand-alone players cost.

Is there any reason to buy a stand-alone player? Except for being sturdier built and having a few more connections on the back, why pay twice for a stand-alone player? Also, via updates, the PS3 is supposed to be able to do the "past Oct 31st stuff" ...

With the PS3 I got all audio formats including TrueHD, dts-hd, right?

What am I missing?

Thanks!

My understanding is that the PS3's PQ isn't as good as the best of the alternatives. There might be other reasons, but that's the one that most comes to mind.

Whats the past oct. stuff ? dts yes dts-hd not yet but in the near future i think. & yes dolby tru-hd. the ps3 has updates it seems once a month or so. its a great bd-player,games,mediacenter,internet browser & much more. You wont be disapointed if you get one for bd playback at all.

PS3 doesn't have DTS-HD MA yet, and you have to buy an aftermarket IR remote w/ dongle and teach a universal remote the commands since the PS3 only has bluetooth for its communication with controllers and the PS3 remote.

So if you only watch movies and won't use it for games, a standalone player, especially the comparably priced S300, is a good alternative.

Sonny, "past oct. 31st stuff" is the BD-J profile 1.1 which is mandatory on all players made after October 31st. A search on the forums page here will give you more in-depth info on it.

I have both the PS3 and the Sony BDP-S1 and I have to tell you both pictures are almost indistiguishable. It would really take avery discerning eye to be able to identify major or subtle differences. They both look great.

Can you be a bit more specific regarding the remote, it appears that I can use the remote for everything so far...Thanks.

some have better audio features but for the most part ps3 is the best bet because they will be coming out with updates far faster than the stand alone players... same here there is ZEro difference between the ps3 and our BDP-S1 which was 950$ onsale when we bought it ... as many movies as I watch on both I cant tell 1 bit of difference

I can't help but think that a lot of the negativity being spread about the PS3 is simply chaff being thrown up by AV elitests to justify their spending more money. You can't underestamate the value of the cell processor being configurable through firmware modifications, this ability means that you can't get much more futureproof.

Bang for buck, get the 60Gb and upgrade the hard drive later if you find a need.

The PS3 uses bluetooth for its controllers and the Sony remote you can use for movie playback. The PS3 has no IR capability on it, so IR and RF remotes cannot command the PS3. Nyko (and maybe other companies) have recently come out with an IR remote/dongle pack, where you plug in the IR receiver to one of the USB ports in the front of the PS3. You can then "teach" a more advanced universal remote the commands of that Nyko remote and therefore control the PS3 with a normal universal remote. The main thing is that you need that IR receiver, which is not currently on sale, except with that Nyko remote I mentioned.

The PS3 bluetooth remote is wonderful but does not allow you to use it on other devices or use a universal remote on the PS3. For those that LOVE to have one remote control everything, this might be a drawback. Personally, I don't give a crap. I wish more devices used Bluetooth remotes (no line-of-site to worry about). My PS3 looks better than any image I have seen BD or HD-DVD or any HD signal in any store. Cause there is only one device hooked up to it and not 10 or 20 TVs, I get the full quality. It is also calibrated and optimized. So I dare anyone to say that the PS3 does not have as good PQ as any other BD player out there.
It is the best deal for a BD player out there right now especially since it is always updated and supports every Blu-ray disc I know of and does so much more than just play Blu-ray. It also supports HDMI and up-samples DVDs.

The PS3 is a terrific Blu-Ray player.

I don't have any problem with the remote as I don't use a universal remote even though I have one because I find the universal causes more confusion with the family then using the remotes that came with the equipment.

The bluetooth remote works great.

The only other downside that I can see with the PS3 versus a standalone is the lack of front panel display. I've become very used to using the on-screen display now with the PS3 and that has become a non-issue with me.

"Almost indistiguishable" means that there *is* a difference, and therefore one must be better than the other. Is the difference huge? Perhaps not, but some people want the best available.

I'm not knocking the PS3. As a piece of technology, it's great, and offers amazing value for money. But if one is interested *only* in Blu-ray Disc playback, then PQ and AQ are the most important considerations, and a standalone player (e.g., the Pioneer Elite) will likely be the better option. OTOH, if one is interested in playing games and all the other stuff the PS3 can do in addition to playing BDs, then buying a PS3 is pretty much a no-brainer.

ps3 capabilties are astounding, considering they say you can get up to 30% more out of it in future updates. it was a no brainer for me, bd player, game player, web browser, pretty much a 500 dollar computer.

Pioneer Elite - $999

PS3 60Gb - $499.99

I wasn't a math major, but unless you have a HUGE Monitor to where you can actually see the difference, I have a wicked hard time seeing how the Pioneer Elite could ever be a better option. $500 can get you a big jump on your BD library!

Cool I am watching my PS3 on a 67" screen, no complaints

If you can tell the difference between the two then you are a better man than I.

Saying one Blu-Ray player is better than another is a bit like saying you're the smartest kid on the short bus.

my opinion on it all is that youve got to be crazy not to get a ps3. for the price it is and the things it can do it is a steal.
