I want Best Actress to go to Streep sooooooooo badly. She deserves it way more than Bullock, even though Bullock did have a good performance in Blind Side.

I heard a funny joke/1-sentence review of Year One. Forgive me if you've heard it, but it went something like this:

"Apparently comedy wasn't invented until at least year 2."

I'm hoping Viggo Mortensen receives a nomination for "The Road" I believe the finest performance of his career so far.

It was good, but I still think he was better in Eastern Promises.

Um, no--
Seth Rogen played the Appointed-Default Dreamworks Jack Black Role this year, until he badmouthed the studio too, and now Jonah Hill will play the appointed default role next year. Twice.

(Tip, Hill: Don't lose any money on Picture bets this year either. )

Dreamworks also seems to be falling into the pit of mediocre if they put Hill in anything...

Up is well deserving of an Oscar nomination and win. Don't think it will get there, but it worthy.

If I had my way I'd want "Up" to WIN Best Picture and Meryl Streep to get best actress. I like Sandra Bullock, but it's really not a performance that's anything special. Meryl Streep may have two Oscars but she hasn't won one in 27 years and she's LOST 13 times!!!! Her Julia Child is one of the most entertaining performances I've seen...plus, she's brilliant.
Totally DISAGREE. Sandra Bullocks performance in The Blind Side was outstanding and I hope she wins Best Actress.

I will agree that it was an outstanding performance, but Meryl's Julia Child was spot on.

Why are the Oscars so important to you?

I personally do not care which movie or actor/actress wins an Oscar, it doesn't change my opinion on a movie or actor/actress, of course I can appreciate it, if a movie I very much like wins an Oscar, but that's about it, it might as well be air for me in the end.

edit: But I do enjoy the show for entertainment purposes

I'd like to see Gabourey Sidibe win Best Actress, because of three things;
1. She was fantastic in it, but has been overshadowed by Monique at every awards show this season.
2. This will likely be her only shot, not a lot of plum roles for a girl of her size.
3. Don't like Sandra Bullock.

I want it to go to whoever had the best performance, regardless of whether the person is someone like Meryl Streep, who has the potential to be nominated every year, or Sidibe, who will never be nominated again.

That being said, I like to see the underdog win (who doesn't?), and let's face it (as you point out), how many roles require a morbidly obese African-American woman? I think you can count on one hand the number of prominent roles that require those three traits in movie history. Precious was tailored made for Sidibe in a way that films rarely are. However, as good as she supposedly was, I've read many commentaries which state that attention is more due to her physical attributes and the nature of the film than her actual talent or performance. Even so, was she the best of last year? That remains to be seen. An Oscar nom is no small thing though, unless it's for best picture with 10 nominees

I want Up in the Air to win because it is the Best Picture in my opinion. I also want it to win because several posters here are crying because Jason Reitman said he thought Avatar was "wierd". Seems nobody on this board or anywhere else can say one thing negative about Avatar without the Avatarded jumping all over them....so for that reason alone I want any film (save Star Trash) to win Best Picture over Cameron's rehash of Dances with Wolves.

Highlighted above is the keyword. Up in the Air is a great movie, don't get me wrong, I have seen Avatar as well and don't think much of it as well. Pixar's UP in my opinion would be the better candidate. But here is the issue with Avatar, its different and brought a whole new different ideas in terms of how to make films in the future, and how to take a simple ideology and turn it into an epic story. To simply put (although I don't want it to happen) Avatar will invade the Oscars.

...At least, one not played by Eddie Murphy or Martin Lawrence?
