I have a Hammer external 160 GB USB drive that I use to do a monthly backup with. Now that I want to start putting some movies on the HDD I am going to need the space. I've just started seeing 1 TB laptop drives. But I couldn't ever see myself needing that much space. Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go with the 320 gb 5400 rpm.

Yea that's a good drive I have the 500GB version. Yea those 1TB won't fit inside the PS3 theres a 640GB that was pointed out a few post up that's the biggest you can get to fit inside the PS3 right now. I waiting for a 120GB SSD to drop down to a good price and then I'll toss my 60GB SSD into my PS3. And then that 500GB into a older laptop.

Hey NewEgg just sent me a Email use this code for another $10 OFF that 320GB WD HDD EMCYPZT32 LINKY it was in the specials count down timer right now just over 47hrs left so give them a email if you already bought it.

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention is that the system allocates a certain amount of space for it's OWN use, not yours. So when you load the drive - even though it's (for example) 320GB, you only get to use - let's say - 280GB. The system says: "Well, there's 320 here, but I want some of that space in case there are files I need to store/copy - So I'll take 40GB, you can have 280". Happens with hard drives, SD cards, USB thumb drives, etc. You'll see it upon installation as 280GB Free of 320BG. It's not that the system doesn't "see" it. It absolutely does - it's just greedy and wants some of the space for it's own use.

As to whether you can change that - I don't know.

Cheers,

Doc

No matter the size of your drive you can still only put 4GB files on it.

There isn't much legal you can do with all that space. Since I put a 320GB drive in my machine I've not used but 2 3rds of it at any one given time.

That seems like a silly statement to me. I don't do anything illegal with mine and it only took me a few months to fill a 320 gig drive. Not everyone uses their PS3s the same way.

As for me, I have:
  • Lots of PSN games
  • Lots of blu-ray games and I don't delete their data/saves after I've completed them since I like to revisit them. I also have all my games installed (if there is an installation), ready to play and like I said, I have quite a few.
  • Maybe a gig or so of music on it so I don't always have to have the PC on for streaming
  • Lots of themes
  • A couple of small videos (disk space wise), basically a demo for demonstrating blurring on a LCD and the Uncharted 2 comic that was on PSN.
  • Maybe a gig or so of photos/wallpapers
  • Several demos (maybe 6 or 7 at a time) of games that I like to check out occasionally but still haven't made up my mind if I want to buy them or not. Also, sometimes the demos are good enough and I like to play them like I would a PSN game since I don't have to put in a disc (it's instantly available).
  • I think I have Home reserving 5 gigs.
With that being the case, I always delete Qore after I've viewed it and since I filled up the hard drive recently, I deleted a bunch of music, all the demos and some of the photos just so I could uncompress/install a new demo and also not have to worry about space while playing Heavy Rain, FF13 and GOW3. Ideally, I'd prefer not to have delete stuff like that since if for any reason I want to revisit it, it'll take forever to re-download all that (demos, Qore, etc).

My 7200 RPM drive runs great in my 60GB PS3. It depends on which 7200 drive you use. I have the WD scorpio 320GB.

My biggest question is, how do you migrate? Is there some way to mirror my current 60GB HD to the new HD?

What brand is everybody using and how much are you paying?
I did a backup from the PS3 menu and all of my RB files were there when I did a restore.

I had the 320G HDD in my old PS3 60G original and it got the red blinking light, doubt it was the HDD running at 7200rpm, so I doubt having a 7200rpm will overheat the PS3. Had the old PS3 with 7200rpm HDD since 2008. I played a lot..

So, my 640GB hard drive arrived from NewEgg yesterday and I was so psyched to upgrade the PS3.

Then, I find out that my external USB drive is currently NTSC. "No problem", I say to myself. "I'll just reformat it to FAT32". WRONG!!!! Microsoft sucks SOOOOO hard. I have a bunch of XP and Vista machines in my house. They won't format an external USB drive partition that's over 32GB. That doesn't do me any good as I have over 50GB of info on the drive that's currently on my PS3.

So, here I am Googling how to format a hard drive to FAT32. I find a page that tells me and I am told to use a DOS command prompt, yada yada yada...So I do that. Takes an hour while it's formatting (no quick format in DOS) and when it gets to the end, it says, "Volume is too large for FAT32."

So, back to Google I go. "What is the maximum size for a FAT32 partition?" A wikianswer page comes up and tells me that it's something like 6 terabytes. Of 32GB for Windows. WHAT GIVES?! And it says to use a Windows 98 oe Millinium disc. WHAT?! I don't have either of those! Why the freak did Microsoft limit this in newer versions of their OS? It's mind boggling.

So, now, I still don't know how to format this 250GB USB drive to FAT32.

I thought this was going to be easy. Of course, nothing with Microsoft ever is.

Any suggestions?

Nevermind. Downloaded & installed SwissKnife. Formatted the drive in a matter of minutes. A simple task that Windows should be able to do.

Microsoft = LAME!
