Dude, come on don't you have any street smarts? Any time someone drives up and say hey man you just say not interested and move on. The fact that they followed you to the ATM is really scary you should just be lucky you didn't get beat up or worse. I'm trying so hard right now to not make fun of you.

I can't believe people are still doing this.
I remember back in the 80's I was on the 405 freeway in CA doing about 65 when a van pulled up next to me, rolled down his window and started yelling at me asking if I wanted to buy some really nice stereo speakers.
I laughed at him and flipped him off. Nice try a$$hole!

you have over 4,000 posts, how can you be an amateur? here's where you went wrong:
1) you bought something out of the back of a van
2) you bought something out of the back of a van because you thought it was "hot", and thus a great deal.
3) you paid with cash instead of a personal check or cashier's check.
4) apparently you did no research on what you were buying?

dude, april fools day is tomorrow.

Yeah I'm going to have to call shenanigans on this whole story. I just can't wrap my head around the idea that someone would be naive enough to fall for this.

Sorry to hear what happen but that is why I never buy anything from anyone which is not a store. I just dont have it in me to trust people and like someone said before if it's to good to be true, it probably isn't true

How is that "unethical"? He said he bought a new system that was worth "50 bucks or so." It's new, just not a super-expensive set-up (if I understood the OP). So I said he should try selling for $50 or so after he makes sure it works. I only cautioned him not to tell the story because people generally stay away from sellers who get too personal. So how is selling something (that he legimately bought) for the amount it's worth unethical?

These guys are everywhere, I've been approached by them twice now in a parking lot. My local news just did a story about how much of a scam it is.

I don't want to sound rude, but is this an early April Fool's joke? Seems a little far fetched to me.

Rent or borrow and white van and then "pass it on"..

Just kidding of course. I was offered white van speakers in the mid-nineties. Can't hardly believe some people still fall for this.

Just so you know... If you get a email about winning the Yahoo or the Microsoft Lottery or something from a lady in Nigeria who needs your help to get money out of the country... those are scams too.

They probably have his ATM pin number now too since they followed him to the bank.

Which system was it? DiVinci, Palermo, Ashton, Genesis, I-Cinema, Kirsch?
There are quite a few brands known as white van speakers. See Wikipedia for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_van_speaker_scam
I (and a couple of other people) constantly warn people on Craig's List about these systems. The scammers love to use CL, because of no overhead costs. But people are learning about them, and they're having a harder time selling them now.
Sorry you got scammed.

I definitely don't think this story is made up, as I have seen a similar situation first hand. I was living in Boston a few years back, and one day while walking to my apartment I ran into a couple girls who went to college with me. Two guys were selling stereos out of a white van said to be around $2,000 MSRP for $150. I never even considered it; mostly because I was a poor college student who didn't have $150 to spend on food (forget a product from the back of some dude's car), but the girls bit after I left. Two weeks later I went to their apartment and the system was already broken. If it makes you feel any better, the guys were quite convincing, even if common sense got the better of me in that no one would sell $2,000 speakers for $150. The girls who were conned are actually pretty smart people, at least book-wise. Fortunately for them, they're both loaded and $150 is a drop in the bucket, but needless to say, you can't trust situations like that.

So you thought it was hot and you bought it anyway? Why? I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but the way these scammers get over on people is because of peoples greed. You're greed took over and you got scammed. Call it Karma, Fate, Destiny, whatever but what you did was IMO wrong and Karma got you. Learn from it, chalk it up to experience, Life lesson etc and move on and don't get caught up in that kind of thing again in the future.

Assuming the story is true (which I doubt), the best part is that he not only admitted that he thought the goods were stolen, but also that he considered then selling them himself to make a profit. Wouldn't that be just as bad as what the guys in the van did?

Sorry to hear that. All you can really say is...I learned a lesson. I had a guy ty to sell me a TV back years ago and said no thanks....called my friend who is a police officer in that city and gave the make, model and plate #, they found the van about 30 mins later, full of stolen electronics...way I look at it is, maybe I helped someone get their stuff back....

So you were in hope it was a stolen product that you could possibly re-sell at a higher price? Sorry, but I have trouble having all that much pity for you if that's the case.

Here is my "White Van" expierience I posted on a nother forum a while back: "Crazy I saw these guys yesterday in the Walmart parking lot near my house. They were talking to a guy and as I got out my truck I looked inside the back of the White Explorer I saw the Kirsch brand on some boxes. I walked slow enough for the “customer” to catch up with me as we both entered the store I said those speakers are fake it’s a scam! He said you think? So I did my good dead for the day. But wow I just read about these guys on this forum."
I am in San Antonio TX. I have not seen them since this was about 2 years ago.
