All PS3's should have a 5 year warranty. I'm tired of all these 1 year warranties out there these days. Especially for electronics.

My 60 gig lasted about 2 years. To me, that's cr@p (especially, for $600). I have VCR's that are over 20 years old and DVD players that are almost 15 years old. No reason a PS3 shouldn't be able to last 2 years.

This rant isn't PS3 specific - it's against all these "we'll cover 1 year, then you can pay for more" warranties out there.

Also, I'm still a bit p!ssed my $600 60 gig didn't last but 2 years.

Extended warranty? Bah!

I agree Cymbol... the PS3 was my first console to die on me, my Genesis, PS2 and N64 NEVER broke down, they still work fine.

I think consoles should at least last as long as a PC, 5 to 7 years is when they usually start to die.

Yep, my PS2, and N64 are in my kids room.

I know nobody has warranties for 5 years - however, if Sony really wanted to impress me - they would extend the "natural" warranty to 2 years (that would show confidence in their product and proof that they are on the consumers side) - and then offer their "extended" warranty for years 3 & 4.

This extended 2-3 year warranty does nothing except take money out of the store's hands that have been offering these.

Sony gets no points on this from me.

No, this option is only for people whose PS3s are currently already under warranty, so it's completely useless for the millions of people with PS3s that are already out of warranty, like you and I.

This is silly, if you're unhappy with the warranty why buy the product? Expecting a PS3 (or any device) to last 5 years is absurd. Yes they do sometimes, but only a few companies could afford to give a warranty for the 5-year length you desire. It is not a viable for most companies. With exception of ZIPPO (they make lighters with a life-time warranty) and my car (a Honda) I cannot name one product I own with a longer warranty than 2 years, unless I purchase additional protection.

Products break, sometimes early and sometimes late. If early, often a consumer has an option to buy additional protection (beyond a standard warranty), if late usually the consumer is out of luck. I believe it is good for consumer when companies offer an option for extending a warranty. I don't often take it, but I like the choice to be there. And for me to make it.

5 years might be asking for a bit much, but I think Sony should at least match Microsoft's 3 year warranty with the amount of PS3s failing to YLOD and Blu-Ray ROM failure. I've already had problems with two of my consoles, and if this one dies then I probably won't be replacing it unless I can unload my old console for a good price again.

that's just not fair, Jon...we are talking about two completely different types of machines.

As soon as you introduce optical lasers, you lose a huge chunk of reliability. Optics are just like light bulbs...they have a set life built into them. They will always need to be replaced.

Those old systems were built around microchip technology..thats electronic. Either it's on or off..the shelf life of board circuitry is phenomenal.

I just wish they had this plan out when I bought my last PS3..I wouldn't have had to replace the laser myself..

<edit> oh, and you're the first person I've ever heard of that hasn't had DRE from their PS2...

I don't agree with part of that. Maybe a 5-year warranty is too long for a company to deal with but the device should be designed to last 5+ years minimum IMO. If need be, make it so the fans are easily replacable since that is one item that could potentially need replacing over the years. The hard drive is another but they already allow that. Also, it wouldn't be as big a deal (to me anyway) if they didn't lock some of the game saves but since they do, they need to design the device to last for its life-cycle (imo, of course).

Actually the laser isn't so bad, I would feel pretty confidant fixing that myself... I had two die on me so far, YLOD and I think the second had to do with the power supply 4 months later, I just think they should be more reliable.

I really hope the newer Slims have less over heating problems.
