It's not worth it if you're doing it yourself as an end user, it's worth it rather as a middle man.

For instance I'd pay someone for a Blu-ray backup of Serenity with the HD DVD original to make it legal, assuming that would be legal. Question of this being, are people saying one way or the other guessing or is there actually any precedent set here? I'm asking cause it's an interesting thing I could email my sister asking, she just graduated law school and was specializing in intellectual property so this would be the kind of thing up her alley.

[QUOTE=dadkins;175491]One thing MANY people seem to miss... to PLAY a DVD/HD DVD/Blu-ray, it has to be decrypted!
Therefore, we *ALL* are breaking the "law" when we play a disc.

Here is something else to ponder... if it can be played, it can be recorded/copied.
Intercept the signal/stream that is destined for the screen, hit record! "

True, but wasn't the idea of requiring encryption over HDMI was so that the highest quality couldn't be copied and that something lesser would be output via analog? So you could copy it but not at the best quality. But maybe they are not enforcing that at the moment.

I didn't know it was quite so easy to copy HD-DVD until I read this thread. I suppose the issue really is the cost of blank media at the moment. It probably isn't worth it for most people to copy unless it is something you can not actually buy new at the moment. I live in Asia, I see lots of copy DVD's in different countries (usually falsely advertised as DVD-9 when they are DVD-5) but I have yet to see a copy of a HD-DVD or Blu-ray disk in the streets. But for that fact, I can not find them for rent and not a lot of the music/dvd shops have them either. But some bigger stores do.

depends on what country, too. If you burn it to BD and keep it to yourself, that is fine (in some country)

Did not realize the Xbox HD DVD add on works USB to a computer. That is pretty cool. I would love a external BD drive for that cheap..

Uhm, the drive in this laptop(Sony VAIO) was factory installed - machine was built specifically for BD playback/editing/burning, you MIGHT say is an authorized device...
Since I can intercept the stream headed to the screen and record/copy it(driver level - Patin Couffin)... where am I breaking the "law"?

Can't say anything about the HDMI, but it is VERY easy to copy HD DVD *AND* Blu-ray Discs.
AnyDVD HD or DVDFab Platinum(my preference) will rip a BD in about 50 minutes.
FULL ON HD clarity!
I have two BDs ripped, and plan on buying another today and ripping it!

*NO*! I am NOT sharing these!
Ripping for PERSONAL USE!

Like I'm going to upload 19-45GB over a Comcast connection.... LOL!

I know AnyDVD HD just added BR support but DVDFab makes no mention of any HD support yet.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it.

Then I record it into a Blu Ray.

I think your precident is covered anyway in MPAA vs Cleanflicks.

But ANY copying of movies and selling them is piracy. Under the DMCA breaking any form of protection is verboten.
