For people who bought the DVD of "Kisses", are the English subtitles for the film partially missing? Only about 50% of the dialogue is subtitled. Mastering error?

I bought Howl a couple of days ago and it was my first exposure to Oscilloscope and I have to say I am very impressed. I had no idea this company had anything to to with Yauch although I remember reading his top 10 Criterion list some time ago...so it doesn't really surprise me. I picked up The Law today...as well as the complete series of Get Smart, sorry I was really excited about Get Smart, and I think Oscilloscope is really starting off on the right foot by offering these types of niche movies with great(looking) packaging and extras.

The subtitling is intentional. There was a discussion about this over at criterionforum.org. Oscilloscope posts over there occasionally and this is their response in two different posts...

It is not an authoring error. We worked with Lance Daly to subtitle the film in an unobtrusive, and what we felt was appropriate, way for the theatrical release given that the dialogue is in English, though often difficult to understand. The subtitles on the DVD are a faithful representation of those used for the film's theatrical release.

The film is very atmospheric, and in creating the subtitles for the theatrical release, it was decided that the least obtrusive we could be with them, the better. Anything that is crucial to the story and potentially not understandable is subtitled. We (and Lance) didn't want the subtitles to compromise the viewing experience. We ran a number of different scenarios, experimenting with timing, color, placement, etc., and this is the one everyone agreed was best for the film. If you're fortunate enough to understand it all, you can shut them off. Please let us know if you'd like a transcript of the film (in its entirety) in case you are missing the missing parts.

since my purchase of BELLFLOWER, i've purchased MESSENGER and EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP from Oscilloscope Labs. i noticed Messenger came with a slipcover.

i emailed Oscilloscope to find out about slipcovers, since my copy of bellflower didn't come with one. They are going to send me a slipcover for free it turns out that they do slipcovers for the bigger releases, like MEEK's CUTOFF and WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN. EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP doesn't

side note: steelbooks are NOT an option for Oscilloscope because they are dedicated to eco-friendly products.

Having just been introduced the their films, i am very impressed by their film selection and by their customer relations.

I purchase EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP(blu-ray/DVD) from Oscilloscope Labs and it came with slip and in the cardboard holder.

I believe some of their movies they also release blu-ray version only in plastic cases to be sold retail. Like Bellflower and MEEK'S CUTOFF.Not sure if they come with slips

My copy of Bellflower is in the cardboard holder, although it's a Blu-Ray/DVD combo. However, my copy of Shut Up And Play The Hits is in a plastic case. That one did not have a slipcover.
