Don't expect any Ghibli Blu until the next Miyazaki directed film, unless Warner does Grave of the Fireflies in Japan

Still waiting for Patlabor 1 and 2 to surface for US release. I'll snag both those to upgrade my DVDs.

I had been planning on getting the special edition Honneamise-label releases for those on DVD but now I'm debating on whether to wait for the Blu-rays. The LE DVDs apparently have a nice info book packaged with them but I want the highest quality possible so I can't decide.

I'm an old school anime otaku... I would love to see some Urusei Yatsura movies or Miyazaki films, or even entire series of Magical Knights Rayearth, Bubblegum Crisis/Crash, Ranma 1/2, etc. etc. on BD.
I would love to get some of the new films too like Ghost in the Shell (I am so tempted to get the $90 BD of the first movie from Japan), Miyazaki, Grave of teh Fireflys, GITS2, Cowboy Bebop, Paprika, Tekonkinkreet, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, etc. etc. etc.
Man I wish all anime was in BD but that ain't going to happen. Still, they look nice on DVD!

If you're asking what Wings Of Honneamise is about, basically it was the first major project for Gainax - the guys behind Evangelion, Gunbuster, FLCL, and Karekano. In Japan it's more often referred to as "Royal Space Force" and its plot deals with an underachieving astronaut trainee in a much-ridiculed space program who has his passion for space ignited by a chance encounter with a religious devotee just as war breaks out between his country and a neighbor. Although critically well-received for its mature storyline and lavish production values it wasn't a commercial success on initial release but did allow Gainax to go on to its later hits. The popularity of their later projects allowed Honneamise to enjoy greater recognition in later years.

It should be stunning in HD

Especially the rocket launch at the end. A lot of it was semi-rotoscoped from the NASA footage.

Honneamise isn't my favorite title - for now I'm waiting to see when GitS & Jin-Roh get a U.S. release so I don't have to import them.

Why is it so expensive? I love anime but they're always trying to screw you over with their packaging of episodes (Pioneer), etc. I would buy any anime movie especially Studio Ghibli.

I saw Steamboy was coming out in Japan which means we should be able to play it, right?? It's very expensive though.

I'm not buying any anime until they are out on Blu. Looking forward to Tekkonkinkreet especially.

This place has a ton of anime fans. It's my biggest love. Probably more than videogames and movies, which is saying a lot.

As for Wings Of Honneamise, I have it on DVD and I think there are better anime that are suited for blu-ray release.

Japanese home video prices were set back in the 80s, when the yen was 220 to the dollar. Today it's 120

Then Ronald Reagan encouraged them to revalue their currency

So 5800yen in Japan was the equivilent of $29.95 in spending power in the early 80s. Today it's almost double that.

The Japanese companies do not wish to sabotage their home market, so the releases here have similar SRPs. Simple as that. They are targeting collectors and enthusiasts like Criterion does.

And probably rightly so because people like me will pay their prices. God, I love anime!

I'd just wait for the NA release, but getting Jin Roh in Blu-Ray is so tempting.
And GITS...and Patlabor.
