Jim, I think what would be best is to have your friend posting directly here, so we can ask him precise questions and get precise answers.
Everything has to be considered (setup).

I talked to him yesterday and he has tried everything suggested on this thread. Nothing.

He will be pulling the receiver and take it in to a specialists.

I'll let you know what is found.

A quote from that thread.....
it seems that the 605 is not included. the zip file indicates 705,805,875,905,885
At this point the receiver may need to be sent in for service to be fixed, but according to this thread the 605 also had the problem. Apparently, the 605 has a unique file whereas the one you mentioned is for all other models. The DSP update is also different from a firmware update.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=13571650

The 605 file is no longer available from this specific post. Also take a look at the DSP file attachment at the bottom of the first post.

You can find to 605 DSP update via a link found in the signature block of Tspeer's post in this thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...6#post18861246

I downloaded the file and it does contain the 605 DSP file. Beware that this is a large download since it includes many other files for all of the x05 series.

Also, I noticed it includes a Service Bulletin file, SB 07008-R1, which states:

Quote:
Symptom:
During playback in any listening modes except Analog Direct, Multi-ch, and 2ch Pure Audio, Pop noise randomly comes out from all channels when the internal temperature is high. This noise stops when the unit inside is cool down.
The solution for that problem is to replace a specific capacitor on the board.

Also, I was looking at the 605 manual and noticed several things. First, check the impedance of the speakers being used by your neighbor. (EDIT: nevermind this suggestion; based on your first post, the RM101 are 8 Ohms) The manaul has the following precaution:

Quote:
Speaker Connection Precautions
Read the following before connecting your speakers:

North American models:
Only connect speakers with an impedance of 6 ohms or higher. If you use speakers with a lower impedance, and use the amplifier at high volume levels for a long period of time, the built-in protection circuit may be activated.
Second, you can try resetting the receiver via the folowing option:

Quote:
If you can’t resolve the issue yourself, try resetting the AV receiver/AV amplifier before contacting your Onkyo dealer.
To reset the AV receiver/AV amplifier to its factory defaults, turn it on and, while holding down the [VCR/DVR] button, press the [STANDBY/ON] button. “Clear” will appear on the display and the AV.

Yeah, a "Reset" might do the trick!

* But before he do that (as it will delete all his radio presets and custom settings), he should try first to unplug his receiver from the wall outlet for about 5 seconds and then plug it back on.

For those who might still be interested.

My neighbor call and told me he had spend over $250.00 having his Onkyo receiver rebuilt. He re-installed and it worked for a short time and then it started all over again, shutting down the surround sound.

He called the company that did the rebuild.

My neighbor was asked a question by the company and he told me what they told him to do. He did it and from that time on, the system has worked without any problems.

He was asked if he was using Harmony's IR extender on the receiver which he was. My neighbor was asked to disconnect it from the receiver. He did and for weeks now not once has his surround sound shut down. It seems like the problem was the extender not working with the receiver.

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? I have been considering an extender but I won't now.

First, $250 to fix an Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver was not worth it in my opinion (you can find one for less than that on e-Bay).

Second, if the main issue was the IR extender jack from his receiver, reason more that he was overcharged for the repair. Nothing surprising here.

Finally, this is the first time I read a story like this about a faulty IR extender!
* Did he disable the Power Control (CEC) feature from his receiver first?

> Thanks Jim to let us know about this!

You are 100% correct, $250 what a waste. But he is about 80 years old and I wasn't going to sit and argue with him. He did what he wanted to do.

I told him to call Logitech to see what they had to say. As of yet, he has not call me to let me know. He will and when he does, I will post their answer.

80? That is nothing.

My fater-in-law died about 1 1/2 years ago at the age of 97 almost 98. He lived with my wife and I along with his wife, my wife's mother, for the last 7 years.

I remember, when he was 93, my wife and I had dinner with them in our dinning room. When my wife and I were finished, we excused ourselves to go next door to have a few drinks with our neighbors. After about an hour, I decided to walk home to make sure all was OK.

I walked into our home and did not see them in their room or his TV room which made me nervous that something had happened to them. I headed for the dinning room where we had left them finishing their dinner.

I made the corner into the dinning room and I instantly stopped and was 100% shocked. I backed away softly and slowly as not to make a sound. There they were having sex in the dinning room. To this day that memory is still embedded in my mind.

After telling my wife, I asked her when I turn 93 would she...before I even finished the sentence she replyed "not in a million years."

That is very true. I don't remember things that well BUT that vision, I still mentally see it.
