Damn, I had no idea the UK release is region-free. Looks like I have a good excuse to make another order to amazon.co.uk.

Any bonus features and, if so, are they playable in a U.S. PS3?

I found the Artisan DVD with all of the features used (mint) for $1. Made my own 2-disc set with the UK edition and I have the best of both worlds.

I did the same thing with the US Blu-Ray. I own the Artisan DVD that came in the terrible Mars Tin packaging. I put it and the Blu-Ray in a 2-disc Blu-Ray case.

Video:

The video is absolutely a step up from the DVD (which would mean a step up from the American Blu-ray) in resolution, clarity, colors, grain, artifacts, etc. It was a pleasure to watch this in HD, because I started to notice things I didn't notice before (being able to read the lettering on Quad's milk carton), etc. While the video transfer won't blow anyone out of the water, but it certainly plays homage to the film, and I would consider to be very solid. Imagine it being very similar to my "A Nightmare on Elm Street" Blu-ray, with maybe a couple marks less. I'd give this at least a 3/5 for video, which signifies a solid upgrade over the DVD. The dark scenes (e.g., on the rooftop before going to mars or the reactor) allowed you to see much more due to the higher contrast of the movie. It's definitely worth watching and owning in this format.

Audio:

The audio is absolutely a step up from the DVD. The audio uses a DTS-HD track, that typically varied around 2.5 Mbp/s. I was completely shocked during several action scenes that consisted of a lot of explosions, etc. It was very crisp, and the depth of the sonic range just seemed limitless. During such scenes, my system was going for a complete workout, leaving us just blown the hell away. The only problem with the audio, is the surrounds are often left out in a cold barren for the most part. However, this is probably how it was intended to be mixed. I really felt like this was the first time I was listening to the movie as well. I was able to hear every nuance of the musical score (It was the first time where I actually noticed that the music score played throughout most of the movie) and I just felt more emotionally involved. The DVD produced a very flat sound field, and didn't add much depth at all to the listening experience. I would place the audio at around 3.5, and possibly even more of the surrounds were used more. The effects didn't seem too dated either, but it's certainly not going to sound like a brand new movie though. I was throughly impressed.

Well after reading comments about total recall having a better version in the UK i said screw it and ordered it, thinking i might be slightly happier with it then my U.S. edition. Man.... i expected only a slightly better look in a "few" scenes or something lol, maybe a LITTLE more cleaned up but WOW

Received this today, and could not believe how much better it looked. Far from perfect to be sure, but night and day better then the U.S. version imo. Glad i imported it as it is my second favorite arnold movie. It actually looks great compared to any dvd or blu version i have ever seen. Makes me wonder how many other transfers or whatever the difference is.... are floating around one country while others get a shafted crappy version.

A decent amount actually. I import many movies and suggest you look into doing the same. It's really quite painless.

Try looking at this list compiled by AnimeOnBlu (wish it was updated a little more).

A lot of imports are higher quality than the Blus you can get in your country, it's important to always have a look around before buying.

@GGX - so what your saying is i have to be even more nerdy and fanatical about my blu-rays then i already am and agreed, could not believe how simple it was. I am already considering ordering equilibrium because i have yet to see it on blu and no idea yet when it will see a US release. Granted it was through amazon but importing was not as expensive or painful as i had anticipated.

@Kynch - thanks thats a start

I noticed on that thread mention of small minor cuts and the like. Anyone know if there are any parts in the UK total recall not in the US release. I watched this with a buddy and at least 3 times we noticed things we did not remember after seeing this movie a thousand times each. Wasn't sure if that should just be chalked up as being my first real HD experience with this movie (when you get a blu-ray version of a movie you have never REALLY seen before you notice things you otherwise never would have) or if it is a different cut.

I would also like to state, that even though I really like the UK Total Recall release, the US version isn't "bad". I've certainly seem much worse Blu-ray transfers, believe me.

My friend has the US version, and we swapped in/out and compared them. In general, we felt both were flawed, but the UK version wins, but not by a "landslide" victory.

The contrast is much higher on the UK version. For the most part, it allowed more detail to be seen, but it also destroyed the scene where Lorie was shooting at arnold in the dark (you can easily tell it's her with the increased lighting). Raising the contrast also made some of the digital backdrop effects look like they are not blended to well. However, the background scenery at mars and the reactor are incredible on the UK version (you can see everything). The contrast is both a good and bad thing, but probably slightly more on the "good" side. The title screen- the UK version is actually superior and every way shape and form. Some close facial shots- the UK version really brings out the detail along with the contrast.

The detail is higher in the UK version because of this mainly, but the US version is not "horrible" either (I was expecting worse, frankly).

The DTS-HD audio seems to be similar in both. I preferred the audio on the UK version, but it could be of a preconceived bias type thing.

That said, the UK version IMO is better, but it's not "objectively better".

Well yeah. The US release has a lossy DTS-HD High Resolution track while the UK release has lossless DTS-HD Master Audio.

Check the latest news as it states Optimum will release a new version this year.
I'd tell you to get the French import but it's the same version as the UK version.
