Early live variety shows, soaps and that (mostly 70s-ish) spate of sitcoms that were 'shot live on videotape' (and something like The Next Generation where significant post-production was done on video) wouldn't benefit much but there's a ton of archived tv that would be great on blu. Me? I'm hoping for Columbo someday. |

The marketing point is why I sort of think they never would go that way.

Would 16mm shows/films benefit from blu treatment? I was wondering about a couple of shows that I know for a fact are shot on that format. The film format is less wide than 16:9 but wider than 4:3 and current releases of one show in particular has DVD releases in 1:33:1 but a little detail could be lost on the top and bottom, and a little could be gained on the sides in cropping to 16:9. Also, could a mod change the title from sticoms to sitcoms?

As someone said, there won't be any incentive to do this until blu-ray dominates the market share and is very cheap to produce - at which point they'll be a new format. You've got to take the plunge at some point to buy. Why not just get the dvd's now. The discs are cheap and look good enough or better than they did during their initial run. The cast aren't going to wait around forever or do new commentaries or such everytime it's rereleased.
Take the show LEXX. Why wait for blu-ray copies if they ever come for a show that'll hardly benefit from it when dvd seasons which were recently made available again are $14.99. |

You mean like WKRP in Cincinnati. Season 1, on DVD, was a disaster, with many of the great music tracks removed. It killed some of the mood, on certain episodes, due to a generic track being substituted at the wrong time.

I remember canceling my preorder the moment I found out they were using the syndicated version and not the original with the old music intact.

I think we have a long, long, looooong wait for decent TV representation on blu unfortunately.
Even some *current* shows aren't getting decent treatment (*cough*Damages*cough*). As penetration increases (and the numbers are looking great so far), we'll start to see some high-profile stuff like Seinfeld and Friends. Probably MASH. But I wouldn't expect to see much... (I hope I'm wrong!) |

Most sitcoms from the 70s through the early 2000s will never make it to Blu-ray. The vast majority were edited on videotape and only exist at that resolution in the archives of the major studios that own them. Studios are even skipping DVD releases for content of this type, directly moving to streaming or downloads.

That said... IF DVD ever completely dies... I could see some old shows released on Blu just because it might one day become cheaper to press a couple of Blu-rays than 6-7 DVDs if they went into mass-production and eliminated the DVD media entirely. That day is a long way off though. |

Pfft. Widescreen is only good for snakes and funerals.
I'm all for TV on blu, but its kind of like opening Pandora's box. We all go on about how blu-ray is great because its closer to the theatre experience, and how it should be seen. TV on blu would be the opposite of that, since the vast majority of it was meant to only be seen on 1.33 SD TV's. It's going to be interesting to see how they deal with it. |

I think it's a safe bet MASH will make it out. It was shot on film and was an incredibly popular and acclaimed series. I would love for WKRP to happen, but it's not gonna considering what happened with the DVD. Was WKRP even shot on film? Star Trek The Next Generation has a shot, but it all depends on how much it's gonna cost to reassemble and how much Trek fans are willing to pay per season. I would love to see St. Elsewhere, but that only got 1 DVD season and then nothing ever since. Gilligan's Island, would be a fun guilty pleasure, but I doubt it would make it either. I'm actually rather surprised and elated that Space 1999 is coming though.

Any television show shot on film will definately benefit. Count me out on the videotaped shows which I believe are all the Norman Lear hits from the 70's. I used to have some of these on standard dvd and even those looked horrendous.
Yes it will be many years before a lot of TV shows see the light of day on blu. Blu has to become more popular first. I have two seasons each of M*A*S*H and Seinfeld but will not buy more because I feel these would be some of the first ones to hit blu. Also I want Two And A Half Men. My favorite show, The Munsters, but seeing Herman and Grandpa on high resolution blu??? alas it's just a pipe dream for the time being. |
