Default Will 80's/90's sticoms ever go Blu-ray?

I want to get shows like The Cosby Show, Frech Prince, and maybe a couple others. However it doesn't seem like there will every be a blu-ray release and I'd hate to get the DVD's just to find out a blu-ray version is on the way. Anyone have any insights to this?

If they do, which I highly doubt, then be prepared for them to be pillarboxed in 1.33:1.

Some will, some won't. It's really just a guessing game at this point.

More likely have the tops and bottoms chopped off, like they have done for the HD versions of Seinfeld. But I hope you are right.

aside from being in a crappy aspect ratio, i don't think many sitcoms would get the treatment.
maybe for bigger shows (Cosby Shows, M*A*S*H, Seinfeld and others) once blu-ray really demolishes the market share with DVD, then companies might take the plunge, but i don't think before that. sadly, because there are a few shows i would really love to see Seinfeld hit blu-ray. watching it on TBS in "widescreen" is almost odd, seeing as i'm so used to the boxy dvd ratios

The Wonder Years has been on my wishlist forever, but that'll never happen due to all of the music copyrights that would have to be dealt with.

I wish they would release that in some foreign country unaffected by the copyright laws.

We'll probably never see SNL, the early years on blu either. Kinda sad.

Better start saving now...11 seasons of anything ain't gonna come cheap.

Which is a big part of the problem. The popular shows tend also to be the longer running shows.

Only the ones shot on film would be of any value to have on Blu anyway... and I'm not sure how many comedies were shot on film.

We know Seinfeld was... that's how they are getting good transfers in HD now (though I wish they would have left them 4:3).

IF a show was shot on film, then I'm all for releasing on Blu... of course there has to be demand for it.

But the shows that weren't... shot on film that is... I see no real point in doing so.

Absolutely agree. I'm not a big fan of reformatting in general but TBS in particular is terrible. The 'widezoom' setting on most tvs does a better job and I really don't think I'm exaggerating.

Reformatting of TV shows is the new Pan & Scan.

Well, a lot of sitcoms from the 80's were shot cheaply on video rather than film so there is no HD to be had. Guess it really depends on which specific sitcoms you're hoping for.

AS was mentioned, the few shows shot - and edited - on film can make the transition. Any show shot on video is already maxed out at 480 so putting it on Blu-ray wouldn't do anything except put more episodes on a disc.

I always wonder if they would actually do this? An entire season one one disc? A seven season show on 7 Blu-ray disc?
