Heck yes! Even though I'll be the first to admit that this film has its shortcomings (the biggest of which is that Jesus is a supporting character in His own film), I still love it. It's like a classical painting or stained glass window come to life with absolutely gorgeous cinematography. This should look incredible in HD.

I wish they added more supplements, though. I believe something like 30 minutes of footage was cut out, and I have a hard time believing that not one single scene from that exists. I would've also liked a commentary track from a film historian and/or a "making of" documentary since what little I know of this film's production is fascinating. Oh, well. I'm just happy to finally own this on Blu-ray. Hopefully Jesus of Nazareth and Jesus Christ Superstar aren't too far off.

I don't think the release will be a digibook because the price is set as $19.99 an usually those go for $34.99 retail.

Yeah, I'm not expecting a Digibook, either, though that would be nice. If we can't get a commentary or featurette made, a "making of" article in a digibook would suffice. I'm not surprised, though. This isn't a high priority catalogue title for Warner, so I'm just grateful we're getting this, period.

It was filmed in Technirama (Large-format anamorphic sideways 35mm) so hope it looks good. Specially those blue skies in the mountain.

Very nice read, Robert. Thank you.
I picked this up back in the spring, about the same time I bought The Ten Commandments.
We watched King Of Kings on Christmas day. A terrific Blu Ray release of a film that I've enjoyed since it's release.

the idiot(s) who say this is mythology has gotta be the dumbest moose on the net. this is historical and based on true teachings. DUH. so is the 10 commandments. Ben Hur is the only one that is based on a fictional character. the old biblical films of the 50's and 60's are some of the best movies ever!

i just bought this bluray and WOOOOW it is extremly gorgues. just played the first few minutes and it does have this kind of pop look about it. im so happy. i expected good picture but this is far beyond my expecations! this has always been my favorite Jesus movie. as good as they allo are in there own was, this is to me, the perfect version and jeffery hunter is truly what i think of when i read the Bible. when i was a kid i imagined when i die i will see jeffery hunter Jesus in heaven! but this is defiently my favorite telling of the Jesus story.

Exclamation Tadlow Music needs your support

If you like the film there's a chance you like the score by Miklós Rózsa.

With your support Tadlow Music might be undertaking a state-of-the-art re-recording of Rózsa's KING OF KINGS.

Check out the Kickstarter page below with more info and audio samples of things to come... hopefully.

Another sample of Tadlow's acclaimed re-recordings:

I would like to see a 4K release of this Blu-ray also.

The movie Red Dawn back in August 10th 1984 was the very first PG-13 movie released. Back in 1961 King of Kings was always a “NOT RATED” movie. If one looks on the back of the 1989 Laserdisc release of King of Kings with 2.0 PCM audio, one will see the movie was “NOT RATED” since it was never summited to the Motion Picture Association for a rating.

However before the DVD and Blu-ray were released, the King of Kings movie was summited to the MPA for a official rating, and received a PG-13 rating. I am not sure why it was summited to the MPA, but it might be because somewhere in the world the King of Kings movie had a brief showing in a commercial movie theater in the 90’s or before the year 2009. Its been slighty over 10 years since I watched this Blu-ray, but I was just noticing the new rating of PG-13 for the movie and thought I would share this information.
